Motorcycles allowed in London bus lanes

Motorcycles given permanent access to London bus lanes from 23rd January 2012

MOTORCYCLES will be given permanent access to London's bus lanes from the 23rd January 2012 following the completion of two successful trials.

The decision to allow motorcycles to ride in bus lanes follows two 18 month trials over the last three years and the permanent access will be introduced to the majority of the capital's red routes.

Transport for London say the trials have been popular, with an estimated 50,000 motorcycle journeys in the capital's bus lanes a day. The introduction of the scheme helped smooth traffic congestion, cut CO2 emissions and improve journey times for motorcyclists.

Ben Plowden, TfL’s director of better routes and places, said: “The results of our latest trial show that the Mayor’s policy of providing access to bus lanes along some of the busiest roads in London has delivered strong benefits for motorcyclists and in terms of improving the efficiency of the road network.

“The two trials have shown reduced journey times and environmental benefits with no significant safety issues thrown up for motorcyclists and other vulnerable road users.

“The additional enforcement measures we introduced (between the first and second trials) have also helped reduce average speeds for riders in bus lanes, delivering benefits for all road users in London.

“This is an important measure which has proved popular with motorcyclists across the capital.”

Steve Kenward, CEO of the Motor Cycle Industry Association (MCI), said: “Industry strongly welcomes TfL’s decision. Allowing motorcycles to use bus lanes sends a clear message to road users that motorcycling helps to reduce commuter journey times, traffic congestion and CO2.

“Like cyclists, motorcycle users face vulnerabilities which bus lane use helps to mitigate and we support TfL’s recognition of motorcycling as part of the Mayor’s strategy to smooth traffic flow and reduce CO2.”

REMEMBER - there are still some streatches that are not designated Red Routes and so are not open to Motorcycles, and you get a fine, like some of the short streatches of Bus Lanes in Lambeth, and Lewisham - wish TfL/Councils would get oit sorteg and open em all up...

Good to see the Cycling lobby didn't cock it up for us then, even though they tried damned hard.

Good to see results and common sense have "triumphed" over prejudice.
Say what you like about Boris, I think he's a "good'un".
Guess he won't be too popular with the extreme cyclists though...

On the contrary, I see the Cycling Lobby have stuck to their guns, forcing the 2 wheeled motorised many, to succumb to the wishes of the pedal pushing few.
Considering that a large number of younger motorcyclists in the Ealing / West Ealing area are now taking up motorcycling (they cannot afford todays grossly inflated car insurance prices anymore), this is both counterproductive to keeping traffic moving safely, also particularly spiteful to thbikers living in and passing through Ealing.
I feel that the Mayor of London should overide their selfish decision that favours only bicycles! :(

R30Paul - Agreed. Headlines such as this give rise to the myth that bikes are free to use all bus lanes in London. Lewisham have seemingly random sections of no-bike bus lanes surrounded by cameras as revenue generators. As I discovered twice in one expensive week (south of Westminster Bridge, watch out!).

Of course I meant Lambeth not Lewisham. Doh!

tiffany saletiffany banglestiffany gold banglescheap tiffany banglesdiscount tiffany bangle. An alternative popular price reduction travel air travel option is charter flights.A typical airline generally provides a set road and established schedule around two cites inspite of the amount involving passengers.Standard airways thus charge higher airfares to maintain those scheduled routes even when the plane is not really half-full.Even so, charter companies usually charter the entire plane via an airline to get a specific time and precious time, and therefore be given a good price cut, which subsequently is died to passengers.Airfares meant for charter routes also are more likely to get perhaps cheaper because the departure night out approaches.Still, charter flights are likewise quite hard to stick to, in there is a better risk involving charter agencies canceling plane tickets if good enough tickets may not be sold, and seeing that there aren't increasing numbers of charter flights to multiple destinations, you may possibly not be apply to another journey immediately
