Motorcycle thief beaten to death by owner

Rough justice handed out to 30-year old man by a 20-strong angry mob

A group of men beat a suspected motorcycle thief to death on Saturday in what appeared to be mob justice.

The 30-year-old man was attacked by a group of 20 to 30 men at Jalan Kuala Terengganu-Kuantan in Malaysia last Friday. The mob held back only after a traffic policeman stopped to investigate the commotion. By that time, the suspect, who was still standing, was bleeding from injuries to the head and face. He died on Sunday at Kemaman hospital.

The suspected thief, from Dungun, had prior convictions and was also believed to have been a drug addict. State Criminal Investigation Department chief Assistant Commisioner Mohd Fauzi Abduri said four men, aged between 30 and 40, were arrested in Kampung Chabang, Kertih on Sunday. He said they were being investigated for murder.

Initial investigations showed that the victim was believed to have stolen a motorcycle in Kampung Chabang early on Saturday. The motorcycle owner sought the help of his brother and three friends to trace the motorcycle and the thief.

The four men later spotted the thief and cornered him in Jalan Kuala Terengganu-Kuantan, where they were joined by a bigger group. Fauzi warned the public not to take the law into their own hands.

Someones life is not valued as much as a collection of metal & plastic?

Odd values we have in the world sometimes.

F**k no! A good kicking, a few months in jail, having to over-compensate every bike owner he ever stole from (bikes value pluss 10% sounds fair), but killing a bike thief? Get a sense of perspective fellas...

Make the punishment fit the crime, but it is too late in this instance.  At least, he won't do it again.

Little bit over zealous there chaps methinks.

If someone tried to steal my bike I'd set the missus on 'em. Fate worse than death let me tell you.

Life is very cheap in some countries, a motorcycle can be worth a lot to someone, in the poorer parts,  in the same way as an Aborigine won't mind you taking his wife, but kick his dog...........

Probably a bit excessive for the stealing, but justified due to him being a junkie. All junkies deserve to die - as they must be dead inside anyway.

was'nt just a theif though, was into drugs and whatnot, not really a good person. yeah it probably was overkill, i probably would not have killed a guy over nicking my bike (given a good beating though!), but i dont feel sorry for his death.

as far as i know, pigeons, rabbits, foxes dont steal bikes and do drugs they're just trying to live the best they can, whereas this guy was clearly a waste of space.

in iran kids get hung for stealing bread, woman and men get stoned to death for having a bit on the side.

as has been mentioned before some cultures think life is very cheap in this case cheaper than the bike

I'd suggest personally that a mob of 20 attacking and killing just one person is cowardly in the first instance and to my mind represents not only a lack of perspective but also a lack of humanism.

Sure this happened in an entirely different culture somewhere but still it's completely over the top, if it happened in this country I'd suggest it would be the worst case of materialism gone mad.

I have no sympathy for lynch mobs personally, they're basically cowards hiding inside the group mentality, sheep without minds of their own.

maybe he got  what he deserved maybe he didn`t but 20 on one sounds like a cowardly act to me !!  maybe it should have been a one on one between thief and owner !

so let him deal with it. and i know what you're gonna say, he is dealing with it by calling you in, but thats the problem, this profession should not have been invented in the first place, so people can sort there own problems out if they really have to.

That makes no sense at all.

Its like saying "the police should never have been invented to sort out crime".

They hang you for that as well, in Malaysia.

Instant mob justice. Ouch!! Not the nicest way to kick the proverbial bucket. I suppose having his face liberally rearranged with a fair few well deserved (and strategically aimed) knuckle sandwiches, and getting thumped to within 2.54cm of his life might have not been an entirely bad idea.

However, knocking him literally into the afterlife was probably, er, overkill.

Posted: 21/10/2009 at 21:40

They went easy on him. Should have chopped his hands off and hung the body up as a message to other criminals. .
