Mappin and Webb - the aftermath

A number of astonished onlookers watched the robbery take place; it's believed one man walked right past the gang as they grabbed jewels from the window.

The gang then sped away through busy West End traffic on two high-power motorbikes. Visordown understands the getaway machines consisted of a 175mph GSX-R1000 and a 160mph KTM SuperDuke.

The area was cordoned off by Met Police while officers carried out forensic tests.

The incident is the fifth raid on a Mappin & Webb branch in London in the past three years.

Is it just me or is labelling these people a 'motorbike gang' not doing us any favours? What evidence is there that this is a 'motorbike gang'? These are a group of robbers who happen to be using bikes as getaway vehicles. If they chose a transit would they be a 'van gang'?

Joe public already see us as anti-social speeding polluters- last thing we need is to be associated with crime as well!

Damn bikers!!!

They'll be stealing our children next!!!

Joking aside - if you wanted to make a quick getaway in London a bike is perfect. The gang knew this and used it to their full advantage. They were miles away before the Police even turned up.

CCTV will have tracked them but still didn't get them caught!!!

Colonel Bob
I have a KTM Duke.  Not the Super Duke, just the 690 version.  As I sit in traffic it's tempting to wonder why I can't simply jump the curb and ride down the sidewalk, loft the front wheel in either first or second without dipping into the clutch, scare people, and then lift the back wheel off the deck when I brake for the sharp right turn at the end of the block. . . funny, I thought it was just a daydream.

There's a gang of them...and they're on bikes.  Hard to describe them any other way really.

If they were in a van they'd add to the assertion that white van men are up to no good.
