MORE average speed cameras are set to go live on a 4.5-mile stretch of the A14 after recent statistics found the area had an accident rate "considerably higher than the national average."

Work is scheduled to start next month on the section from junction 31 to junction 34 and expected to be completed by the end of March.

Paul Sinfield, Highways Agency route performance manager, said: “The accident rate on the A14 between Girton and Fen Ditton is considerably higher than the national average."

A 13-mile section of the A14 between Huntingdon and Cambridge has already been armed with the average camera system, which has saved the economy a claimed £4.3 million annually in post-crash costs.

The accident rate is higher than the national average because no one is looking where we are going. We all have our eyes glued to the speedo and desperately trying to do the mental maths to work out our average speed because we strayed 5mph over the limit for a couple of miles and now we need to work out how much under we need to go to even it out again.

Based on what?

Every single site this has been used on has had a big reduction in collisions and a huge reduction in injury collisions.

Despite what protesters constantly say, the overwhelming evidence shows that people are just more focussed in general driving through average speed zones.  In reality no-one needs more than an occasional cursory glance at the speedo to maintain a speed below the limit - we all managed it for our driving tests as inexperienced teenagers! - was that dangerous?

The accident rate is higher than the national average simply because the A14 is shit.

The traffic is too heavy for a dual carriageway (it should have been a three lane motorway).

The slip roads are far too short to allow many vehicles to match speed when joining the carriageway - meaning small bikes have to find a space between HGVs travelling faster than they are, and HGVs travelling significantly slower than the rest of the traffic suddenly pulling out in front of you.

SPECS cameras won't help at all.  Someone should shoot the f#ckwits who gave this road the go-ahead.
