It wants to be a Multistrada?

Looks alright to me.

I guess SMT stands for 'Super Moto Touring'?

All I can spot is a sculpted seat unit and larger fairing - the tank looks the same.
Be Interested to see what the front looks like?

I'm just hoping the advertising blurb doesn't use the words 'A new breed of motorcycle' or I'll *!@$%!!

Just how far can you ride an SM with one leg stretched out?

Now you get to find out with the 'Sado Masochistic Tourer'....

Bugger - just bought an adventure 990.  Swapsies KTM?

Yummmieee

Same genius chassis as the 950SM, but without the arse splitting seat
Same big power as the 990SD, but enough wind protection & tank range to actually use it
Same comfortable ergos as those legions of 1200gs BMWs without the "wannabe Charlie & Ewan" stigma

So whats the problem? How is it taking liberties with the SuperMoto thing?

Ahhhhh Not so good for the pub poseurs amongst visordown? thats what the 990SMR is for.

My local dealer tells me that they are off to Granada in March for its official launch, however I can't wait for that and am off to Excel to see it in the flesh first. It will be interesting to see what the media have to say after the launch, no doubt they will be there as well.

Had a few words on the KTM forum about this new addition to their range, there was a lot of mixed comments and reactions. The die hard 950 rider were not, to say the least, complimentary.

IMO KTM could not of done a better pitch for 09.

Its in ahead of the competition like Ducati and Aprilia for a good 12mth and a genuine alternative to BMW's standard 12GS and MG's Stelvio. I just hope that KTM price it right and as its marketed as SM-T, T for the obvious Touring, and include the exhaust luggage frames and bags in the price, after all, people can remove them should they wish to.

Would Yamaha try and sell the FJR with out bags these days.............I think not.

I saw the SMT at the NEC and its far nicer in the flesh than the photos..I reckon it could be great all rounder...

Very few manufacturers include luggage as standard, not even Yam with the FJR ITYWF.. at least KTM after market bits aren't too ridiculously priced so the luggage should be affordable

I think you'll find that the FJR is sold with standard side cases and its the city cases that are available as accessories.

Below is the features from their website:

  • 1,298 cc fuel-injected inline 4-cylinder engine
  • Aluminium chassis delivers sportsbike handling
  • Adjustable screen, cowl, handlebars and seat
  • Big 25-litre fuel tank, heated grips, 12V socket
  • Reduced clutch lever load
  • With sides cases as standard

Fair enough ..point remains its the exception not the rule to supply luggage

I agree.

I got a chance to ride a 990 SM a few months back, it were only 6mths old and said then it needed a screen and a lower seat when bugger me what do KTM go and do......bring out the SMT.

Still, only 2 and a bit weeks to go to the show.

Yes Dannn, looks like ur right, I have, and love, an old 2004 multistrada 1000ds. the press panned the multi when it was launched. Now look, Morini, Aprillia, Kawasaki, Triumph, Benelli, KTM, all have tall bikes with road tyres and good forks n brakes. Real world motorcycles!

I've tried the SMT now and as I've said elsewhere it didn't float my boat so keeping my GS Adventure for another year...............buying a BMW K1300R instead.

One for on and one for off road.

I like it. The 'T', btw, stands for 'Travel', relating to the shortened suspension.

I might have to look into this machine a bit more...
