M4 bus lane to be axed

Labour-induced bus lane gets chop in new Tory initiative

by Visordown News

THE GOVERNMENT is to announce the M4 bus lane will be scrapped at the end of the year when the party holds its annual conference later this year.

From 2011, all road users will be able to enter the 3.5 mile (5.6km) lane, which until now was reserved exclusively for buses, black taxi cabs and motorcycles.

The lane, which will be suspended from 24 December for 18 months when it will be brought back into use for the Olympics, is situated on the London-bound carriageway from near Heathrow.

The bus lane was introduced by former Transport Secretary John 'Two Jags' Prescott in 1999.

seems like another waste of money to take ti away simply to put it back again... it hasnt been a problem so far so why the change?

Even as a biker I must admit it was a good idea to scrap it. Occasional bus and a lonly rider can not justify gridlocking Motorway . There is enough roadworks that stop A4 at peak hours, I would rather investigate, than alienating us on bikes using empty lane on the bussy M4.

We can filter anyway, why moaning at the two mile non issue.  Its not ideal but I don't think we are the only ones on the road , we privledged enough.

Looking at cars stuck there everyday we should consider others, not everybody can ride bikes.

Don't use it regularly but although nice to have as a biker, I'd rather see more cars being able to move. As stated above, we can filter.

Sad it is all a big catch 22. Bus services crap, so everyone uses cars, so no investment in bus services, so lots of congestion. Ho hum.
