London commuter road gets SPEC cameras summer 2010

84 average speed cameras set to 'watch' over A13

A THIRTY-SEVEN-MILE stretch of average speed cameras on one of London's main commuter roads will go live this summer, in a bid to cut down on the highway's high accident rate.

Eighty-four new cameras will 'police' the A13 to the east of London between Canning Town and the Goresbrook Interchange. Speeding offenders could face a £60 fine and three points on their licence if they're caught over the speed limit.

Ben Plowden, director of integrated programmes at Transport for London, which runs the project, said: “Traditional safety cameras are very effective at reducing the numbers of people killed or seriously injured on London's roads.

"However, roads such as this 12km stretch of the A13, which has a high level of speed-related collisions, have huge potential to benefit from the new average speed camera systems.”

TfL hopes the new cameras will also reduce collision-related congestion and smooth traffic flow.

Nearly 500 collisions, including three fatal and 34 serious accidents, have been recorded on the stretch of the A13 between 2006 and 2008.

Sorry to hear that but they are forward facing

Aren't all collisions speed-related?

Surely there should either be a blanket walking-speed speed-limit, or we should have to accept "speed-related collisions".

To be fair and plz don't get mad. It does sound like the road needs to have some new measures in place to reduce the number of accidents.

I'm not all for speed camera's or anything like that but it does sound like this road could benifit from them. Besides if they're forward facing whats it matter?

Cameras address a symptom of a greater problem. Too many congested roads. Maybe if there were a continual improvement of the road system itself so that the volumes of traffic can be safely carried at proper speeds and introduce better driver training then the cameras would be unnecessary. Build more roads and wider roads. Reduce number of large trucks by increasing rail-shipping and other alternatives.

Introduce incentives schemes for two-wheeled ownership - maybe tax-relief, free parking, bike-lanes, free tollroad access..............

500 accidents, 3 deaths and 34 injurys...

Umm ok so there is about a 98% chance that I can travel on that road without being involved in an accident?

Thats good enough for me, go spend my fucking money on policing real crimes.
