Akira concept bike could appear in new movie

YOU DON'T need to be an film geek to appreciate the iconic motorcycles used in the original Akira movie – so the rumours that Leonardo DiCaprio has signed up to do the forthcoming real life movie from Warner Brothers should at least get your two-wheeled tastebuds tinkling.

The movie, set in the story’s near-apocalyptic future, features gangs roaring around massive Japanese cities on outlandish future-cycles. Should look good with a stackload of cash and actual mad-ass bikes made.

Ruairi Robinson, the man behind the well-received Fifty Percent Grey animated movie will be the Director of the two-part project.

"There's some suggestion that Leonardo DiCaprio will be appearing as the teenage protagonist Shotaro Kaneda, although  that seems the least likely element of the report. It seems to be based on the involvement of DiCaprio's production company rather than any official announcement so far."

I love the original film and I don't know whether to be excited by this new version or very, very worried about it given Hollywood's history with doing stuff like this.

If DiCaprio, Damon or Affleck get roles in this I'll be disgusted.

The original is the best manga flick ever made and I can only see it going wrong if it's all hollywood stars who can't act for shit.

It needs some proper Asain talent in there - Chow as the rebel leader, Tony Leung as Tetsuo (yeah I love Hardboiled too)

I'll remain sceptical for now thanks!

Mr Rooty Tooty

Can't see it happening. Massive fan boy / cash in. Shameful, man.

The original was such a pure vision, do we really need a live action travesty part written by test audiences?

Urgh, I feeel awful just picturing how shit it will be

Cant be as bad as the first English dubbed version where some of the little children have adults doing the voices, best to listen to the japanese version with sub titles.

The reEnglish dubbed version is far better.

One of my friend has the comics and I was amazed to find out how little of the story is in the film, the comic is Epic compared to the film (which an amzing film IMHO).

Mr Rooty Tooty

Oh aye, didn't want to mention the original manga for fear of being accused of elitism. But then again I am a snobby fucker, I read it when it was serialised in "Manga Mania!" many years ago and I was, and still am, blown away by the consistent brilliance of the the artwork through the entire canon.

The film is essentially a potted rewrite

I couldn't watch the dubbed version, the worst atrocity is when they alter the script so that the characters mouth is forming vaguely the same shapes as the English dialogue superimposed on the top. So we get an obviously dubbed film where the script plays second fiddle to the broken illusion that it's a home market product....insane!

Anyway, Japanese is the greatest language in the world for shouting and arguing with.

You want to try the remastered version, they redubbed the English (new voice actors) - it more acurately to the original japanese script.
