Police warn riders for 'damaging' Holly Hill wood in Kent

KENT Police have warned off-road riders from riding the Holly Hill wood and posting videos that show them 'damaging' the conservation area.

A two-day operation was undertaken by Kent Police, resulting in 14 warnings given to people driving anti-socially at Holly Hill Wood, near Snodland, and if caught a second time these vehicles would be seized.

Six fines were also handed out and one vehicle was seized, as the driver had no licence. PC Tony Green, from Kent Police's motorcycle team, told Kent Online: "The actions of these individuals are just another form of mindless vandalism. The potential damage to the environment caused by bikes and cars in this area is vast, as it is a special conservation area and also a site of special scientific interest.

"We have seen evidence of rare plants and trees being damaged and being uprooted deliberately to access the protected areas in vehicles.

"What compounded their actions though is that the culprits were so blase about this that they decided to post videos of their deeds on YouTube.

"We wanted this operation to send a strong message that motorbikes and 4x4s in this area will not be tolerated and those found driving here could have their vehicles seized permanently."

A great use of police resources. Someone riding off-road, probably on what used to be a byway, where a TRO has been permantely added to it.

Well, it's a nice area, so there's no real crime to tackle like muggings, knife crime or burglary, what do you expect them to do, sit in their cars eating Doughnuts and drinking Coffee all day?

Actually being someone living in this area and being a park ranger, I have to agree with the plod on this. The riders that have been going over the downs and surrounding area are not your typical responsible riders. They are bloody dangerous and a menace. Many times they are going far to fast for the "paths" they are on and never yield to pedestrians, horse riders or other legitimate road users. Add to that the fact that they cause huge amounts of damage to the footpaths. Bare in mind, the people they are clamping down on are mostly uninsured, and not even on the "former" green lanes.

I'd agree with 'bob the builder 6' on this one - "police crackdown on offloading" gives one impression of the situation, where "and being uprooted deliberately to access the protected areas in vehicles." Is probably a decent hint at what types of riders these people are

Difficult one this. There are Byways in the Holly Hill area where providing you have a road legal license & bike then you are perfectly aloud to ride or drive on them. The BBC news reported on this and took the angle that a small minority of riders/drivers were straying off the byways and in doing so damaging a protected area. The police were saying that they were cracking down on that minority, not those on the byway itself providing they had a license, insurance and road legal bike of course.

Why is no one mentioning the FOUR WHEEL JEEP TRACKS?????????????

The police were only dealing with 4x4's and riders who were 'trashing' the woods. A lot of motorcycles were in the area using the green lanes quite legally and were not hassled in any way. Some of the vehicles stopped were uninsured and drivers did not have licences.

I'd say by the amount of traffic that probably was a legal byway. It wasn't damaged and what wear there was looked like it was caused by 4 wheels seeing as it was parallel tracks. I think the issue is probably people leaving the byway.

I wish derbyshire police would show such interest when I tell them my neighbour is being anti-social in an untaxed and mot'd rusting Golf MK2!!!

I can assure you they are very often off of the byeway and hurtling towards you at high speed.. my terrified horse and I can confirm this!!! .. I have actually been avoiding the restricted byeways and bridleways at weekends as its just too dangerous and I have actually been chased..... sadly the few louts are ruining it for the often very lovely bikers that we sometimes come across riding legally who have been nothing but lovely and courteous .. shame not everyone knows how to share the countryside properly!!

Too many people in this country whine without real cause for offence.
If the riders are not supposed to ride in this area then where are they being offered to go instead as an alternative? I would guess nowhere.
Some are too quick to whinge and criticise BUT it seems the ones doing the moaning never offer up a resolution to the problem they have caused. If they offer no resolve then they should be encouraged to shut up.
Its no good when a few persistent whingers are intent on villifying everyone who does something they dont like because Im fairly sure others could find something about the whingers they dont like, such as the perennial whinging for instance, breeds conflict it does.
IF we all did that then where does it stop? We kill folk when they cross the line?
They are kids playing, let them be. After all it is the same persistent whingers that have closed all of the kids playparks, stopped them playing ballgames, or using playing fields, the list is endless.
Shut the whingers up!
