Kent Police clampdown on May Day bike run

Kent Force stops 125 bikers and dishes out 76 fixed penalty fines as 1000s travel to Sussex coast

KENT POLICE stopped more than 100 motorcyclists, as hordes of bikers travelled from London to Hastings on the annual May Day motorcycle run.

Police say the action was taken to avoid any potential collisions, as many motorcyclists were riding too close, too fast. It's estimated thousands of bikers were involved in the rally, which follows the A21 through Kent to East Sussex.

A spokesperson for the force told BBC News that 125 motorcyclists were stopped and 76 fixed penalty fines were issued for offences for such as excessive speed.

Sorry but thats a load of bull***t....... Monday morning 4 of us went out just 4 a ride. 15 minutes in we happened to cross the hastings route for about 400metres, not lairy, 30mph, lo and behold 2 policebikes fired up and pulled us over. 4 undersize number plates 120 squid thank you very much. Dangerous riding? Yeah righto.......... Eventually ended up at Rye for a cuppa with some whinging thrown in! and there's more..... On way back (Ashford rd) through twisties, spotted police bike bout 10cars in front, gradually all the cars peeled off leaving us behind the police bike at couple of hundred metres. He gradually slowed indicated to pull in then pulled out behind, radioed to 2police bikes in opposite direction to help him so was stopped for a second time. Dangerous riding? Righto........

I understand the principal of what they are doing, but if a heavy handed approach is taken, rather than an "educational" approach then they run the risk of alienating riders.  It does particularly stick in my throat, as I am a fairly new rider from Kent - passed in September.  Having heard such good reviews about Bikesafe, I thought it would be a good way of making sure im not picking up bad habits and getting more confidence.  I put my name down in October.  To date I have heard nothing from any of my emails and the Kent Police Bikesafe website still states no dates are planned at the moment, when many other counties have started booking - at the beginning of the season when people probably need it the most.  So I wonder - are training days being dropped/delayed for more profitable/quota filling enforcement days?  I know they are set these targets and have to meet them as part of their job, and I realise that schemes like Bikesafe are a bonus not a god given right, and that "Iam" etc are also available, but courses like Bikesafe go a long way towards building goodwill towards the force so it would be a shame if they instead focus on things like your "iffy" plates or a slightly too noisy exhaust over potentially lifesaving education.

despite being a riding God, a couple of threads on here got me thinking that maybe a days training would be beneficial. . .  .alas Lancashire Police Bikesafe

There you go - They have built up an excellent reputation for Bikesafe and started winning bikers over (and lets face it that aint easy being the militant bunch that bikers can be) and then they undo the work by dropping schemes like Bikesafe to concentrate on enforcement.  I regularly see and read about days where a dozen officers or more and several cars are on the road stopping all traffic to check tax/insurance etc of vehicles and dishing tickets and towing vehicles.  while thats fair enough, we see adverts every 15 minutes on TV telling us how clever the Vehicle Licensing computer is and that there is no hiding and fines will be issued no matter where you hide your car.  So do that then, and free up the police for more important work than tax inspectors.

The last few Bikers Nite's in the Cotswolds have seen a jovial and very humanised Police presence. They were at last weeks Meet on bikes, marked and unmarked, promoting the Bikesafe theme. This week one chappie was there in the County's Evo VIII - looking very pleased with his ride he was!! On the whole, they have been a very pleasant and sociable bunch, enjoying the banter and a spot of ribbing too!

As far as I could tell, no one's bike was 'inspected' and no riders were approached in an official capacity, but I'm sure if they were then I'll be put right

Still no planned BikeSafe dates from Kent Police, despite them apparently turning up at a couple of events/Heing Gericke plugging training.  They did also manage to field a stand at the Detling Bike Show - showing off their mobile speed camera vans though.
