Just 1 in 200 police get a fine or points for spee

Thousands being let off where public have to face court

You don't have to fear one of these if you're an officer of the law

A POLICE spokesman once branded drifting over the speed limit as being as unexcusable as driving a knife into someone, yet from over 90,000 police caught speeding or running red lights last year, just 350 were penalised.

This figure smacks of double-standards.

In Thames Valley alone, over 4,000 speeding offences were racked-up by police officers, but none were prosecuted.

If like us, you're a regular road user, you face an 84% chance of being fined £60 and adding 3 points onto your licence if you're caught speeding. If you're a Thames Valley police officer, the figures say the chances of being fined are 0%.

A force that may have something to hide is the North Yorkshire Police, who didn't provide any information for this survey, their excuse was that they weren't aware of any incidents where officers were speeding.

The Police Federation said: "Safety is paramount for all members of the public. However there are instances where officers have to break speed limits or go through red lights.

Yet more evidence that speed cameras are purely for revenue? We think so.

OB
An excellent point for discussion!

I received 3 points and a £60 fine for 91.6mph on a straight, downhill, almost empty section of the A1M last year, which in no way irks me because I'm well aware that it's against the law.

What does irk me is that, as a recipient of 3-points, I am deemed as a higher than acceptable risk on the roads.

At no point on that day was I representing a risk to myself, or other road users, beyond the one I would have been presenting at 70mph.

The points system has obvious advantages, but the system of using static cameras, which purely measure speed regardless of circumstance is flawed.

Bring back traffic police in place of Gatsos and stop this policing by points trend.

"This figure smacks of double-standards."

Just like this article smacks of sensationalised uninformed reporting

How many of those police officers were off duty and caught speeding just like everyone else in the UK and ended up in court .............. or are those figures too difficult to find .........far easier to put up a "double standards" load of bollocks

I will ask a question and you can answer it honestly

I was on my way to a burglary in progress call on duty where 2 people were seen going into a house......... i was in an unmarked car with no blue lights and no sirens and it was 4 am. I went through 2 speed cameras on the way setting them both off and as per policy called in to control room to time and date it with my index number of the car. I also went through a red traffic light setting off the camera on that as well........again informed control by radio. We got there and caught 2 people coming out with a load of jewellery who then got an extended HMP holiday.

Are you suggesting that i should have to appear in court for 3 summonses in order to explain my actions and hope that a magistrate agrees with me and returns a not guilty verdict. Bear in mind i know of uniform officers who set off the same camera avery single working day as it leads into a busy estate where most of their work is

So what is it..................... should every officer have to appear in court or not?

Hmmmm.

Over the past week I would estimate that I have set off speed camera's approximately 20 times and red light cameras about 10. These were travelling to Violent domestics, fights, a stabbing, an assistance call from a colleague and chasing a stolen car.

Yeah, I should go to court and lose my licence.

I'll think you find the figures quoted are the number of times speed cameras etc are set off. The reasons for setting those off are not quoted.

slogger
typical coppers trying to justify there speeding

its obvious if your on duty then you have the right to drive or ride like an arse ( i have witnessed some of them )

but lets make the rules black and white

no blues n two = points = ban

no special training then stick to the speed limits or take the penalties

me i couldnt really care either way cos if you speed and use your original reg no then your asking for plod to stick it up your flaps

there is no accountabillity for the force drivers in the north east
i have seen them chase cars at 5 pm in a crowded estate with kids playing outside doing at least 60 to 70 in a 30 zone ???

there are no good coppers they are all out to get you :smoke:
