Is this the beginning of end for the big GS?

Writing on the wall for BMW's iconic bruiser

by visordown news

RUMOURS ARE doing the rounds at the moment that the latest generation of big GS BMW, the all-new 1200, could be the last.

According to German insiders, the latest version of the iconic bruiser is likely to be the final step in the larger-engined motorcycle, with the smaller, less polluting F800 option taking over the mantle of big BMW off-roader.

According to reports, a statement from BMW Germany has said that the 800cc engine is the ideal motor for its future line-up of bikes, the statement has also gone on to say that there are no plans to replace the current GS lump in either the off-roader of any of its sibling models.

They will continue annoying distant peoples and cultures, but at a slightly slower pace.

Then again, from what I could see of their documentaries, they mostly travelled on dirt tracks @ 25mph anyway. So the 800 would probably be just as quick for their 15000 mile journey.

the 'K' series was supposed to replace the boxer engine 20 odd years ago but it never happened. The outcry of the faithful caused the Bavarian masters to reconsider.

GS was over the top for their last trip and the 800 puts out plenty of poke, it should make a really good "adventure" bike. I've ridden the road version and was really impressed, sounds good too.

That engine is what puts me off ever buying one... for me at least, they never seem to get the combination right. That new 800 sans boxer twin seems good, but it should've had a shaft... The new 1200 rocket ship looks like a fusion of Honda's Blackbird from the front, but one of their own monster trailies from the rear, complete with flanged, muff styled rear lens. Horrid. Clumsy even.

I liked the K series... it really only needed tweaking.

I like the 800 too. I've never ridden one but looked at them all enough times in deciding what I'd like to buy one day in that style of bike.

I think it probably should have shaft drive rather than chain. 800 is plenty big enough for a big long distance bike.

I wouldn't have a boxer, never liked them, I'm into the K series onto my 3rd (flat 4) k1200

Good. They're hideous monstrosities, even more so than other BMWs.

Mmmm.. Dunno about that. Aren't they still a big seller?

I've already got the version I want either way.

Would'nt be suprised if the emission laws are the demise of the flat twin, and also power-to-weight ratio.

I've owned a few of the old 2 valve per head models and they were brilliant mile munchers and reliable too.

Yes but the original GS was an 800 flat twin, when the top sport bike was a R90S (in Daytona orange) so things have just gone full circle

Maybe someone should tell BMW and their customers 'cos they just brought about an MU of both versions and the first batch has sold out already.

Make sure you test ride (of course).  I had a sit on an F800S  at the NEC and was (unpleasantly) surprised by how prone the riding position was.  I'd be unhappy on it for town riding, I think.

Filter?!? We ride BMW's man..

Traffic splits before us like the red sea as drivers defer to our presence, grovelling and forelock tugging their ways to the side of the road.

I'm a four cylinder fan but bought a GSA for its shaft (oo err) long tank range and good weather protection. Be nice if they could put a four in one. The 800 is chain with a small tank which is a pity coz I would seriously look at changing. Everything is a compromise, no one thing does it all despite the hype. As long as the air cooled twin can get past emission/noise regs without massive development costs I cant see it disappearing for a while yet.
