Inside the mind of Valentino Rossi

One of the UK's leading graphologists analyses Valentino Rossi handwriting from a note he wrote to his team and offers remarkable insight

Valentino Rossi is the most famous man in motorcycle sport and one of the most famous sportsmen on the planet and yet, not much is known about him personally. He's guarded by a close inner circle and rarely lets the outside world in.

Until now.

Visordown has had the handwriting of Valentino Rossi analysed by one of the UK's leading graphologists and former chair of the British Institute of Graphologists, Elaine Quigley. This system of character analysis has already been tested on members of the Visordown staff with almost unerring accuracy, despite the analyst never actually meeting the subject matter.

Quigley is a leading expert in graphology and, over the past 30 years, has studied the handwriting of hundreds of high profile characters such as George Bush, Tony Blair and Gordon Brown. Clients have included the BBC, The Independent, The Times and many blue chip companies as part of the appointment of highly paid executives. She also works with the police and has studied the handwriting of forgers, fraudsters, con-artists, murderers and more. Her highly respected work has seen her carry out analysis of high profile murderers like Raoul Moat and serial killers such as Peter Moore and Fred West.

When Valentino Rossi announced his departure from the Fiat Yamaha MotoGP squad, he penned a letter to his team which was widely publicised on the internet. We wanted to know more about this elusive, private individual so we gave a copy of his resignation note to Elaine Quigley and only told her that the writer was male and in his 30s.

Here's what Elaine has to say:

'Firstly the overall style of script is rounded but also with many angles. This shows a conflict between a people-centred interest linked to a sharp mind, and need for individuality that can lead him to 'know best'.  The mostly vertical direction of the writing indicates independence and a wish of the writer to be his own man, to be able to analyse and decide on an issue before taking it on board and to have a practical purpose to do so when he does.

This is earthy script with the thick stroke, but there are also finer textures, showing sensitivity, though it is difficult to define exactly because it is only a photocopy.'

Precision

'His precise approach, seen in the accurate detail of the dots and t-crosses, will make him finicky at times, second best won't do and he can be irritated or tense if something seems to be going awry.  The tightness lower down the page and in some of the lines, indicates this.

The baseline takes the written lines sometimes upwards and sometimes down. The interpretation here is that he can need persuasion to get started on a task, but can go with the flow once things take off.   Upward lines show that everything is going well and he doesn't need to worry.

The rounded letters and the long finals at the end of words, show generosity to those around him, especially if he can help and guide them effectively. This is a giver when he chooses to be, but not someone who can be pushed around and expected to fall in with other people's plans just because they say so. He prefers to give voluntarily rather than being dominated, but will work as hard as necessary once he has made a commitment.'

Challenges

'He wants to be valued and appreciated.  Being a special friend also means that there is some possessiveness in his make-up.  It is as though opening the gates of such friendship provides automatic entry into the life of the other person.  He will win over people who create a challenge to him and hope to make them  friends and be part of their circle.  A sense of comfort in sharing in-jokes and knowledge provides the reassurance of having a place in the lives of others.

This doesn't mean giving away his own freedom,. but he will identify himself as part of a lively group that shares the same interests.

However, if someone close lets him down, he finds it difficult to forgive and forget, because he invests a lot into any relationship, either work or personal and it matters that all sides keep faith with each other.'

Public persona

'The signature is very large in contrast to the script.   The differing slants also make it clear that his public image is much different from his working and private one.

The left slant is pronounced, unlike the upright with slight right and left tendencies of the script.  Left slant   is leaning away from others and the public in general, but with this huge movement in comparison, he is showing strength and dominance that is not negotiable.   Especially the final letter that is angular but also like a star.  He wants to shine publically, but if his shield is pierced without his permission, he can be difficult and unwelcoming.   This very complex signature, with both enticement and rejection is a much larger summary of the components of the writing.

'He can be charming and generous when he's the one in the driving seat and he wants to be on good terms with others, but he can be cool and uncommunicative when someone is not in favour.  He has hidden toughness that helps him survive and he should never be underestimated.   There is egocentricity that ensures he gets his own way either by manipulation or determination.  Therefore,  in his professional role he wants to go out and make his mark, identify his territory and not be available on the personal level, even though he comes across as pleasant in conversation and interaction.  Everything though will be under his control.'

Demanding

'On a more personal level, his vulnerability will be evident to those who know him well, but the responsibility will be much greater for them to handle him sensitively and to live up to his expectations.   He can be possessive and implicitly demanding and it will be very difficult to refuse him.  This can then become claustrophobic.

If he feels that things are not going as he believes they should, he will offer advice and expect it to be taken and if not he can be critical and upset.

Deep down he questions himself and worries about things.  He doesn't let it show, because he wants to always be seen as the one who can cope, who has strategies that makes things right for others and he doesn't need help himself.  If he is promoting the cause of other people, then he can forget about his own anxieties or embarrassments.  But in  thinking things over, they can become inflated.  Therefore, being busy and useful is a valuable antidote.'

Professional life

'In a professional sense he expects to be respected and valued, though he will not always be the chief, but an influential 'Indian' working on behalf of the 'top man'. Even so his standing and worth should be seen as high and though he gives, he expects to receive in like manner, even if he has to manipulate to make it happen.

'Over all he appears charming, ebullient and self-confident and enjoys a high profile, hence the powerful signature (his image to the world).  He is highly competitive therefore and seeks success and prestige as evidence of his value and achievments.  This means that he has to maintain his image through constant awareness of his position within his world, as a result of which (seen in some of the close letter spacing), he can be tense and keyed up when under pressure.

However, when encouraging others to folow his passion, he can patient and encouraging, leading them to sharpen their expertise.  He will show good will and enthusuiasm when in an optimistic mood and respond readily to fun and warmth in others. Social rather than solitary, though he does like and need his own space, his pracitcality is partnered with a perfectionist streak and he has high expectations of those who he considers are part of his world.'
