Honda V4 BMW GS beater in the pipeline

BMW get wind of new Honda V4 trailie

The German mag's take on the new Honda V4 trailie

HOT NEWS from deep inside BMW this morning - the bosses at the German manufacturer have got wind about a new bike coming from Honda, a new V4-powered GS-beater.

The Honda is apparently being targetted to be shown at the end of 2011 and will feature the firm's new V4 motor, which will first appear in the company's VFR update expected at the end of 2009 to go on sale early 2010.

Called the Honda XLV1200, the bike will get a GS-style upright riding position, big pillion seat and low centre of gravity. Apparently, one of the main concerns at the moment with the project is the size of the fuel tank, Honda wants to make sure that its new mile-eater can go for hundreds of miles on a single tankful. Which all sounds good to us.

Our BMW insider reckons the company are determined to see off the threat to their own GS range.

Looks to be a possible successor to the Varadero 1000.

PhwaaaaaHaaaaa!  Is it April 1 already? A V-4 GS fighter? Why not repurpose the Gold Wing 6?  Seriously, this isn't a power format that takes nicely to off roading, even the soft roading that GSers often do. Other tha  the  super comfy riding position, why in the rver spinning eath would anyone want what promises to be an overweight, over complicated softroader?

Two Plugs

Looking forward to it. The XLV1200 Grand Alp as the supposed new bike would be called looks great.

And it won't be that difficult to beat BMW. BMW is heading the recall charts, Honda doesn't...

It would be the perfect succesor of Honda's '1983 XLV750R (RD01) with shaft ride.

Two Plugs
An supposed XLV1200(R) Grandalp would be perfect. Honda made a statement with the very first Transalp back in 1986 - no one would like it, 'to big, to heavy', 'to expensive' and the same for the first Honda XRV650 Africa Twin. I would prefer it above any BMW GS (including the new F800), no doubt about that. But hopefully Honda will make up to the lack of listen to customer feedback. Honda does build solid and reliable bikes - but when was the last time that something really exciting left the portal of the Honda Dream factory? Spoke wheels and the weight under 220 kg (loaded) would be appreciated... And a proper fuel gage. And if it is just as reliable and comfy as our current two Varadero’s (an 2000 MK1 with 140.000 km and a ‘2004 ABS with 70.000 km) with an competitive price tag along… the choice would not be that difficult.
