FORMER world motorcycle champion John Surtees has hit the headlines by becoming the first person to drive a private car through the Channel Tunnel.

Surtess, 75, took an alternative-fuel Ginetta sports car from England to France as part of the annual Beaujolais Run.

Stopping at the mid-point way below the English Channel, Surtees signed the wall, which is a Eurotunnel tradition.

Speaking to Sky News, Surtees said: "It's a unique experience driving through this tunnel like this.

"It could get a little bit claustrophobic, it's a sports car that would be more at home on the track.

"But as you get older you don't get too many first time experiences, and this is certainly that."

Surtees' son, Henry, was killed in a motor racing accident at Brands Hatch earlier this year.
