A RECENT study by the Foreign Office has shown a quarter of young students travelling abroad admit to riding or being the passenger on a moped or motorcycle without checking if their insurance covers them first.
The survey, conducted at 18 universities across the UK, asked 1800 students about their experiences of hired motorbikes, scooters and mopeds while travelling overseas. The results showed many had no idea about relevant insurance cover, while others admitted it was the first time they'd taken to two wheels.
The findings have prompted the organisation to urge students to check their travel insurance policy small print carefully to ensure it includes third party cover. The Office also advises riders should check their licence covers them to drive a two-wheel vehicle and whether local law requires motorcyclists to wear a crash helmet.
The advice urges travellers to wear a helmet and suitable safety clothing whatever the country's law dictates.
