Five-year maximum jail term for dangerous drivers

Government announces punishment hike for dangerous drivers

THE MAXIMUM jail sentence for dangerous driving is to be more than doubled from two years to five, the Government has revealed.

Justice Secretary Jack Straw warned drivers who are involved in incidents where others are seriously hurt they could face up to five years in jail.

"Dangerous driving can destroy lives and have a devastating impact on the families and friends of its victims.

"We have listened to the innocent victims of dangerous drivers, their families and road safety groups. Their experiences have directly informed these changes."

Mr Straw said the new law would not come into effect until after the general election.

It's about time...........should be longer though, say 10 or even 15 years as dangerous drivers need punishing big time. BUT, typical watery Labour conclusion, they've have no balls, they're so scared of taking a stand on anything they've heloped turn us (the UK) into a laughing stock. The sooner they're out the better....and I'm no Tory.

Still pathetic.  If you want to kill someone in the UK - just run them over.  You might only get points on your licence or a suspended sentence.  Every time someone gets behind the wheel they should accept the responsibility that they are in control of something that can easily kill - if they are driving badly, drunk, high, or doing something stupid like putting on makeup while they drive - then they should be charged as murderers.  5 years is nothing - if they've killed someone else simply because of their stupidity, selfishness and arrogance then give them a sentence that reflects what they've done.

Should be 10 or 15 years at least.
