Father sentenced over quad bike death

46-year-old father handed out nine-month suspended sentence over death of daughter in quadbike crash

A FATHER has been given a nine-month suspended prison sentence, after admitting manslaughter over the death of his daughter in quad bike crash.

Gary Cooke, 46, from Blackmore, Essex, was also banned from riding quad bikes on public roads for two years. Elizabeth was killed on Boxing Day 2007 when the quad bike she was driving collided with a Range Rover.

Prosecutor Stephen Harvey QC said Elizabeth had ridden a 50cc bike with a 12mph speed limit but wasn't familiar with the 100cc quad bikes she received for Christmas.

"This tragic incident was a direct result of the defendant's gross negligence," said Mr Harvey.

Annette Henry, defending for Mr Cooke, said her client always held himself responsible for his daughter's death.

"Clearly this is a tragic accident which has absolutely devastated the Cooke family and one for which Mr Cooke holds himself responsible. He clearly will never forgive himself for what has happened. He is already living a life sentence."

Glad the law has had a bit of common sense. It was an accident, one he'll have to live with every day for the rest of his life.

Yeah - seems fair enough. And sending him down wouldn't be a deterrent to other people - 'cos those are the sorts of things you do when "it's just a few hundred yards"...

I personally can't see what good it did to prosecute the poor s0d in the first place. The guy is a loving father who will never recover from the consequences of a poor decision. A conviction for manslaughter seems to me insult to massive injury, whether or not he served time for it.

Poor guy, my heart goes out to him.

I have similar feelings, but maybe the fact there is so publicity might make it less likely for someone else to do something so stupid.

Puzzler

So it's not in the public interest to send this idiot down whose stupity results in a little girls death. The idiot who posted videos on youtube (but didn't kill anyone) gets sent down and every week old folks who can't pay their council tax (because all the money they paid into the system over the years has been wasted by the government) end up in prison. If it had been someone elses child he'd killed would a suspended sentence been acceptable? Of course not. Talk about a screwed up system.

Stuck for a Christmas present?
