Eurosport loses MotoGP deal

BBC gain exclusive rights for UK broadcasting

Posted: 27 June 2008
by Visordown News

AFTER MANY years of successful collaboration, MotoGP rights-holders Dorna Sports would like to announce that coverage of the MotoGP World Championships will no longer be available on Eurosport from the 2009 season.

Dorna would like to thank Eurosport for a partnership which has been of mutual benefit for several years, having helped take MotoGP to new levels of popularity and coverage whilst also offering the pan-European broadcaster impressive viewing figures.

The decision is part of Dorna’s new strategy of working with national network broadcasters around Europe, always focusing first and foremost on free-to-air coverage to bring MotoGP to wider audiences.

This means that in the UK, the BBC will enjoy exclusive coverage of MotoGP next year, whilst in Spain and Italy, where MotoGP enjoys long-term agreements with TVE and Mediaset respectively, negotiations are ongoing about extending coverage to more hours during the weekend.

In Germany, a deal has been signed with a privately owned free-to-air channel, giving the commercial network exclusive coverage for three years until 2011. Meanwhile, negotiations are ongoing in France and other major European territories with various mainstream networks; further details will be announced shortly.

I suppose that means we have to put up with that Australian dickhead and Parrish.

Oh joy....

Bollocks, there goes any chance of watching any of the 125's & 250's, including qualifying, guess we will also lose Ryder, Moody & Mamola, and get Parrish and Cox,

BBC have also got the F1 rights from 2009 wonder which event will get the priority... what a load of cnuts

Just makes my crap day worse, bet I get a puncture on the way home, or get taken out by the fire engine rushing to my blazing house. Bollocks.

rant over.

Posted: 26/06/2008 18:14

How the hell is this meant to help Dorna? In the UK they will be getting a fraction of the coverage (not all the practice, qualifying, warm-up etc), no 125s or 250s. How is this good? For who?

Then we'll have to suffer the fucking awful BBC commentary - not to mention the fact that they're so ill-informed it astonishes me. How is this meant to compare to the knowledge and intimate personal knowledge that Mamola/Ryder/Moody have of the teams and personnel?

I knew that this was going to happen one day, but not so soon.

I'm certainly not watching (or listening to, more to the point) the wanky BBC presentation

ffs thats the worse bit of news i've had in a long while, fuck, fuck and double fuck

The MotoGP class is the only 'product' that really matters to Dorna in terms of revenue. Their ambition is to grow MotoGP's audience along the lines of F1, and packaging the premier event along with a couple of races that don't mean much to the casual, non-enthusiast viewer (which would ultimaely make up the majority of the viewing audience, as it does in F1) doesn't help sell that product.

Fair point - but they'll still almost undoubtedly lose the qualifying and will lose the race too if F1, snooker or crown green bowling is on.

I'm waiting for some saddo to spark up with "yebbut they've got Suzi Perry" - to which I reply "get a fucking life! Have you not seen a girl before!"

I'm well pissed off! Watching the Eurosport coverage was almost like having a couple of mates round the house watching with you.

Posted: 26/06/2008 18:56

I havent got a life and I think suzi is fkn sexy

Posted: 26/06/2008 19:01

That is f*ckin shit! When do they lose the contract, will we stll have coverage next year?
Posted: 26/06/2008 19:04

that is utter bollocks, why do these people never think about the viewing public.

first of all whitham is taken from wsb, now this

ssssssssssshhhhhhhhhhhhiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiite

Posted: 26/06/2008 19:04

thats tragic news. reminds me of the day murray walker retired, the sport will never be the same again.

A perfect description.

Its the way the BBC commentary is aimed at the un-educated that pisses me off, Parish & Cox twice referred to MotoGP bikes on Sunday as Superbikes.  FFS , I know its only a small detail but it matters, you cannot top the Eurosport team, informative, witty, and truthful even if it hurts.

The BBC should realise that the majority of motorcyclists actually have a depth of knowledge about their sport, as oppose to car drivers and F1, and it won't only be F1 that will get priority you can count on Darts, Football, Rugby, Snooker and Athletics, will all get the popular vote over bikes.

Fingers crossed they may at least put on the qualifying etc on bbc3 or on the red button.

Right, let's do something about it.
Here's an email template

"Sir
I am saddened and dismayed to see that MotoGP is being withdrawn from Eurosport after 2008.

Eurosport have the finest coverage of this great sport going,
The commentary team of Toby Moody, Julian Ryder & Randy Mamola are absolutely second to none and along with the cracking coverage of practice & qualifying across all motorcycle classes add up to a show and surely coverage for Dorna that is unparalleled?

Please would you re-consider this move?

Yours and kind regards

Let's bombard them but please, keep it polite and well behaved - there's no other way of doing this.

Belinda Rogerson (I think) who puts together the Moto GP coverage for the BBC regularly posts on MotoGPnews forums, as does Julian Ryder, we could try persuade her to take on the eurosport commentary team or ask her what coverage there will be next year, (but the site seems to be down at the moment)

Nige, thanks for the link.

Email sent.

Everyone please do the same

Gotta say that sucks.  BBC have never been able to provide the level of coverage that Eurosport do, for any motorsport.  Friday Saturday and Sunday coverage of all classes?    You can bet we'll be reduced to the MotoGP race and maybe highlights of the qualifying if we are lucky, and theres not an Eastenders episode to show.

Wow, What a shocker!!

When do you ever see adverts for their Moto GP coverage? It's still a secret, or it seems it is. Imagine what the F1 coverage is going to be like, all over the place - TV, Radio, Internet, i;e the full works. Seeing as Eurosport will no longer cover Moto GP, then the BBC are going to have to up the ante, Big Time!! Maybe they could sign Toby, Julian and Randy. Wishful thinking!!<!-- / message -->

Posted: 27/06/2008 08:51

Only got SKY to watch motorbike racing on Eurosport.

We now get BSB on Eurosport, but will lose Moto GP next year to the BBC?.

I suppose one consolation it's not on ITV.

They really did Fuck up BSB with their coverage

A case in point was Sundays Donington race, Scott Redding wins the 125 Brit GP, you know the story.

Gets home to put the BBC NEWS 24 on to watch their Sportsday programme, what was the first motorsport story, Lewis 'Failiure' Hamilton comes 5th on the French GP, oh and the second story was youngest ever winner of a GP race, who happens to be a Brit won at Donington.

Thats the way it will always be with the BBC, god help us and MotoGP.

The BBC are shit when it comes to Bike's.. Sports personality of the year.. I doubt they actually knew who JT was last year when he was sat playing the piano..

I guess we'll have to wait till the end of the year DVD comes out and watch it all then.. Ill hide myself in a box all year so i dont know the results.

Julian And toby are the best commentators.. That ginger haired fat cunt wants shooting.. I was gonna do it at the Day of Champs but forgot my ammo

That's a shame.

Not familar with the Eurosport team as such but they do seem to have a unique commentary style. They make exiciting. They seem knowledgeable about the teams and riders.

I also enjoy watching qualifying and the other classes. The bbc seem to have the motogp on bbc three or something at an odd time. As others have said they aren't up to scratch with facts/figures.

Don't know if that fact that they have exclusive coverage next year will mean it's live and on bbc one or two.

One slight advantage that I can think of is it would be on bbc iplayer if you've missed it. On the other hand Eurosport have several repeats. Figure bbc might bit it will be on at 2 in the morning.

will probably be bbc3 although i think its on bbc 1 at the moment so should stay there.

good point about the iplayer but will it show all classes

Posted: 27/06/2008 12:45

The BBC should stick to making soaps, drama, murders and all that crap, which keep the womenfolk happy, why yhey have to waste our licence fee money to take away our sport from the channel with coverage and the best commentary team in the world, can you really see the BBC giving any coverage on Fridays at all, well maybe if a spectator is injured it might make the news.

Dorna, you are a greedy bunch of twats!

Posted: 27/06/2008 12:46

Agree with everyone.

1. Parrish & cock havn't got a clue. you can count on at least 6 foot through the tv moments per race when they get it wrong. parrish has a picture of rossi in his y-fronts & im sure and cock likewise wth stoner. no one else even gets a mention.

2. more importantly, just when we've got 3 good riders in the 125 class they reduce their exposure to the general public. smart move that well done. From 2009 you're talking about a highlights package at midnight when it clasheswith F1.

I am bored at the moment so thought I would have some fun winding up the BBC forums, I have so far tried to register the following usernames only to be rejected.

ParrishandCoxrcrap, Coxnparrishrcrap,  Parrishsuckscox, Coxisanob, Coxisatwat Parrishknowsnothing, motogpforeurosport,  you get the general idea. All were REJECTED inside 20 seconds.

So I tried Parrishncoxrgreat...... Amazing ACCEPTED instantly, does Parrish have some strange hold over the usernames available ?

Bored Bored Bored, and just realised Qualifying is on, Bye.
