Essex motorcycle cops use covert video

A good way to alienate bikers is to join their rideout and film them

Essex Police ... in the 1970s

MOTORCYCLE cops are using covert video cameras as part of a new drive to reduce biker deaths across Essex.

Essex Police motorcyclists, using unmarked machines fitted with cameras, have caught more than 50 speeding riders in just three weekends.

The 55 riders, who were filmed speeding or riding carelessly, will now have to attend a newly-launched Rider Intervention Developing Experience course.

The covert patrols have been launched following an increase in serious accidents involving motorcycles in Essex.

Between January 1 and April 12, three riders died and 42 were seriously injured, compared with three fatalities and 30 serious injuries in the same period last year.

Sgt Mick Green, of the force’s casualty reduction unit’s motorcycle team, said the covert patrols started in March. Riders in plain clothes on unmarked bikes were joining groups of motorcyclists on popular routes to record offences.

He said: “There are several routes from London into the Essex countryside that are popular with riders. Our officers join the back of the group and use the camera to record offences or to radio ahead so other officers can intercept offenders. Motorcyclists are a unique group of road users and require unique interventions to reduce casualties. Some consider themselves invincible, and even after a short disqualification, might return to the road with the same perception.”

How about reducing casualties by catching women doing their makeup whilst texting and shouting at their kids in the back? no? rather prosecute bikers..

Well just keep your eyes open and don't speed in stuped places.

As FishFace says, just a bit of common sense, and some proper observation required.

They'll undoubtedly be on something like Sprints or K1000s, wearing hi vis and taking very sensible wide lines round bends. Will be tricky to pick them out from IAM types.

I think they follow us around 'cos they get to thrash around on tax payers money. like George Stan said, no one else seems to get this sort of 'intervention' so we should feel warm and lovely that they think we're so special. Do the police also cruise round in blinged up saxos and un-roadworthy matt black 3 series beemers?

I only ride with friends and when someone else tags on we slow down until they pass, easily done. Brings a new meaning to stranger danger...

Worcestershire police were using maroon Pan Europeans a couple of year ago. They’d cruse along the A38 trying to hide in your blind spot. If you didn’t take off they’d pull you over anyway and start knit-picking.

Seems strange that pretending to be something your not is acceptable for a the police but a criminal offence for everyone else ?

I know just what you mean George! I can't beleive they are allowed drivers licences now, or that they have the vote!

Its always those dam womens fault.... Them and their dam kids

Geez, I am one angry sexist fool.

Knit-picking???  MSJ, if you knit while riding you really shouldn't be surprised when the cops pull you over .........

KNITTING AND DRIVING CAUSES LIVES, (i'd think too many texting is more dangerous and scarily I see texting drivers daily, it's like the old people driving on South Park in South west London.)

One of my first Speeding tickets was from overtaking an unmarked car back in 1981,unmarked cars are generally accepted and they include scoobys ,325 beemers etc so whats the difference?

pyndman

Those cops are out of control. Use people power; everyone on motorbikes in essex should ride like mad hatters to make their job impossible.

Who said, dont do anything wrong and you wont get booked? Bollocks, the cops will bust you for anything, it has nothing to do with safety, they're all utter morons.

I think if they are riding behind you this could be considered entrappment as you might feel that you dont want another rider so close so speed up a bit to increase the distance between you only to be done. However this must all be false as the police no longer have traffic patrols do they? or so the lying bas--rds keep telling us.

SlowInFastOut

Just wave past any bike behind you don't recognise, then give him a good look over as he overtakes.

George Syme

We have the same problem up here in Scotland. They are not wearing Hi Viz clothing at all so that they can blend in with other bikers. At the end of the day if your riding like an idot then you deserve to get a rollocking from the plod.

Here in Austria had a full 12 hours riding Saturday... and saw 1 Plod car... in the middle of a town... the cops leave you alone out in the Country as they know your going to speed with or without them... found the old bill over here are more interested in solving crime than chasing motorbikes... going to be fun when I come back to England with an Austrian plated bike for 2 weeks...
