Enduro Africa: Locals not impressed by behaviour

Participants boozing and riding without helmets, say locals

ENDURO AFRICA has come under fire after numerous complaints about some of the riders' behaviour - some of it levelled at the Royal brothers, William and Harry, who are taking part on the 1000-mile adventure.

Complaints include the princes, their bodyguards and most of the bikers flouting South African laws by riding on public roads with no helmets – in full view of police – and some of the bikers knocking back quarts of beer at a nearby shebeen (drinking bar) instead of helping William and Harry to fix Siyazaka creche.

“If we ride without a helmet, the cops nail us. The guys in the shebeen also did not set a good example. They are meant to be helping young kids and not boozing and then riding their bikes,” said a local.

Not sure how genuine this unnamed quote from an African local is, but it sounds about right. Throwing pelters at individuals who've already put thousands into local charities- haven't they heard the one about biting the hand that feeds you?

I can't see the authorities letting them ride far without headgear, but there's a lot to be gained with a few hair in the wind publicity shots, enough to turn a blind eye for a while. Even our boys in blue step back when we ride bare headed at a friends funeral- time and place, anyone? Heaven forbid somone should enjoy a cold one after parking up their scooter...

Charity is so 80's. The new thing is trade not aid which sounds about right. Anyway, nowt wrong with letting the royals have their way out there. If they can get away with taking RAF choppers on a jolly to see the girlfriend, why in heavens name shouldn't they be allowed to play russian roulette on their bikes?

Africa..........a continent renowned for its law abiding natives and upstandingly honest authorities............

The only way a 'native' is likely to complain is if they werent on the backhander gravytrain that makes Africa work.

I rode in the first ever Enduro Africa in 06.

back then we had all bought a bike to be used by riders for health, and rode that bike for 10 days along the southern cape/wild coast before crating them up and sending them up to riders' HQ in Zimbabwe.

AT NO POINT did any rider ride without a helmet...it wa just NOT done..

I know the guys who look after the riders over isn SA along with Simon Smith who runs EA...and they all were 1, respectful of the people, and 2, never promoted breaking the law

OK...we had a drink at night...but NEVER on the rides during the day.

I really think that ths is classic 'over media' bollocks written to sell papers and have a go at the princes...rather than talk about the thousands of people these trips benefit each year.
