THREE WILD elephants that escaped from Vu Quang national park have been causing concern among hundreds of households in the two communes of Huong Dien and Huong Quang in the central province of Ha Tinh.

The elephants have crushed motorbikes in their path and stormed into residential houses, according to local authorities.

An official from Huong Dien People’s Committee said last Saturday night, three elephants attacked a man who was riding a motorbike near Hoi Doi.

"Being frightened, the man was forced to abandon his motorbike and dozens of fowl he was transporting in order to escape," said the official. The victim of the attack, Nguyen Van Phong, said he pulled himself together after being stunned for a minute. Later, he returned to the scene of the attack with three villagers.

"It was a frightening spectacle," said Phong. "The motorbike was a pile of scrap iron and 20 birds were completely crushed in their cages."
