EAST SUSSEX Police have offered advice to bikers on avoiding motorcycle theft following a sharp increase in motorbike thefts over the last few months.
Police are advising owners to increase security measures and and have teamed up with local motorcycle dealers to gain discounts on various security products.
Inspector Kaj Bartlett believes the root cause of the problem is joyriders. Bartlett states that the majority of incidents in the area have involved scooters and smaller capacity machines, which are stolen, abused and then abandoned. Police believe this probelm can be reduced dramatically if owners took a few simple precautions. They suggest:
* DATA Tagging* Alarm system* Secure chain* Disc lock* Garage your motorcycle where possible* Park it on your own premises and if possible use security lighting* If you do have to park it on the street, try to chain it to a fixed object.
