Doohan blasts town mayor over track closure

Bike racing hardman speaks out over 30-year-old track closure

FIVE-TIME motorcycle world champion Mick Doohan has slammed an Australian town mayor for voting to close an historic motocross track on Australia's Gold Coast.

Doohan became embroiled in the row after local residents called for the 30-year-old track to be shut down.

Up to 1500 motorcycle riders could be forced to take their dirtbikes elsewhere, after Mayor Ron Clarke also voted to shut the track.

"He's (Ron Clarke) lost me in apparently not realising the Gold Coast needs facilities for kids to ride," said Doohan.

"There would seem to be plenty of places around the Gold Coast away from residential areas where they could provide facilities for the young local riders.

"If the kids don't have a track they may go and race in the hills, and that's when accidents happen."

Angry residents have campaigned for years for the track to be closed.

"People think it is a sob sob story that the 80 kids are losing the track but there is a great joy in the area that they are gone," one resident said.

"We're not children hating but the noise was horrendous."

Tltourer

Doesnt this happen all over the world, take Manfeild park and Pukekohe in NZ.

My theory is that the stupidest people always live next to tracks because anyone with a brain wouldnt have moved in in the first place.

Frankiesan

TL gotta agree with you there!!

People move into homes near tracks cause they're cheaper over here. Most of them know that with a few big leaflet capaigns and some serious feet stamping the 'we all hate motorbikes' brigade will get their way and th motorbikes are gone.

Same thing happened in Keithley with an area called the flappits. Been open to riders for years, totally unorganised chaos, but, allot of people went, a burger van had a spot there it was a good community. Then people that live 2 or 3 miles away start singing the song and close it now has.

What I now garentee will happen is all the little scrotes on their nicked bikes or even legal ones will take to the streets. I know which I find more annoying and waaaay more dangerous.

Oh to be in charge for a day!!!
