Fatal and serious motorcycle crashes in Derbyshire fell by 40% during a high-profile summer campaign, according to newly released figures.

The road safety partnership said 69 incidents were recorded between April and September - 46 fewer than during with the same period in 2009.

The campaign saw nearly 20,000 riders given a safety guide, backed by media publicity and speed camera patrols.

The guide showed accident black spots and gave tips on safe biking.

Ch Insp Steve Wilson, head of roads policing at Derbyshire Police, said: "This campaign is a good example of how the organisations responsible for cutting road deaths and injuries in Derbyshire can work together.

"The road safety partnership allows us to coordinate our efforts and ensure that we're using the right combination of publicity, training, policing and road improvements."

It's a long time since I was "knee down" in Derbyshite...oops I mean Derbyshire ) It use to be a fantastic to hone my lean angles, ahem, on a pair of Avon Roadrunners....

What is it like under the eagle eyes of law these days?

Timpster
I'd like to see how their "real crime" solving has gone in the last year, you know burglaries, stabbings, muggings etc, have they improved by a similar percentage ?

Posted: 10/01/2011 at 17:08

Cookie Monster 2
wow, 46 fewer fathers/sons/brothers/mothers/daughters/sisters are killed needlessly on the roads and twats on here would rather the police solve a dvd player getting burgled...no wonder the general public think all motorcyclists are cunts

Pagik

Way to endear yourself there. Twat.

CaNsA

LOL Pagik

But i wonder how many of the 2009 deaths were speed related, motorcyclist @ fault etc etc

Publish a number, but keep the specifics quiet. Another pointless announcment.

Al Jones

Cookie monster is spot on, 2 many Rossi wananabes trying to get thier knee down without a single brain cell or clue as to why they need to on a 'Road'

And consider most of those deaths have more to do with a serious lack of roadcraft and than other road users. And in thier last breath of life thinking "I knew that would happen"

Dickheads like that who will continue to make us all look like morons!!

Posted: 11/01/2011 at 01:26

Easytarget
Moron is a term for used for those with a mental age of between 8 and 12. Al Jones has enough grammatical, spelling and comprehension errors on his post to warrant it. This is a case of "Lies, damned lies, and statistics" from a politically biased police force probably thought up when they were resting between beating students and invalids or illegally entrapping enviromental activists. Theft is crime; speeding is an infringement of regulations.

Hedgehog5

Timpster - we're not talking about crimes...? The subject here is road safety & they're claiming it was achieved by distributing these guides not overzealous policing. In most respects I'd put saving lives above saving belongings. YMMV.

As CaNsA says, is this a reflection of motorcyclists getting better or other road users being more aware of bikes?... or just a decline in motorcycling? Statistics indeed.

Pagik

Is it lonely up there on your pedastal Al Jones? Just for the record, I have been riding my current bike for the past 3 years (ZX6-R) and LOVE IT TO BITS never had ONE brush with the old bill, because I pay attention to what is going on around me, as 99% of riders do.

To tar everyone with a sports bike as a Rossi wannabe who have no brain cells, frankly demonstrates a stunning level of ignorance and lack of understanding of the rest of the biking fraternity.Still, as long as you get to wag your finger and look down your nose at the rest of us, I guess thats all good isn't it. Enjoy yourself.

Although I do agree with the sentiment  the way I read it those figures are not just deaths but also serious incidents. It would be interesting to know the definition of a serious incident.

Also, judging by the previous track record of road safety statistics it wouldn't be a massive surprise to find that a change to the definition of a serious incident is responsible for the drop.

John Wild 2

Cookie monster, Al Jones are not true bikers who want freedom or minimal state intervention. They are looking to an almost communist state to preserve their boring languid lives of meaningless hate for the freedom of others. I have been riding for 27 years, enjoyed the thrill and excitement of acceleration and the amazing forces that come to bear on most bikers. I love the people, the music, the beer, the babes and the freedom. My work is highly sensitive and much regulated. Everyone needs freedom, even if it comes at cost. Anything worth something comes with risk, even having a child! That pair of fools believe that risk can be removed from living, how wrong they are. Here's a drink to risk and life...

John Wild 2 - I want the freedom to give my opinion on an internet comment board on the article and responses it is discussing.

You'd rather I didn't.

So go shove your freedom up your arse you hypocritical fuckwit.

p.s. I've ridden all over the country and parts of europe the last 15 years, ride almost everyday in all weathers and all conditions so please dont come out with all this bullshit and who is and isn't a biker.

No chance of getting this back to a sensible discussion then. What a shame.

Mr Pogle

Hey Pagik. Dont think Al Jones is tarring everybody!!  I live in Derbyshire and at weekends it is full of wannabes. Many on sports bikes who only go out at weekends and think they can ride like Rossi. I have almost been taken off by one, who then pulled across me and in to the petrol station where he suffered my wrath.

Al Jones, fair point made.

If you need to know I ride a GSXR..... amongst others.
