DALLAS police is under fire after claims that officers left the scene of a motorcycle accident without finding the rider, who was later discovered dead and had homeless people rifling through his pockets.
"They were not aware that the rider had fallen so far back from where the bike came to rest," Dallas police said in a statement yesterday.
Officers claimed that they thought a bystander might have taken the rider to a hospital or that the rider walked off. Patrol and traffic officers and Dallas Fire-Rescue personnel also searched roof tops of low buildings and under the ramp near where the motorcycle was found, Dallas police said Monday.
But more than four hours after the accident, passers-by found the body of Thomas Davidson, 38, of Dallas on the ground under the freeway. Homeless people had taken his wallet and other possessions.
Lt. Jeff Cotner said: "We want to determine all of the facts and
circumstances surrounding the accident and our officers' actions. We're going to talk to all the involved parties and get a better understanding of what occurred."
