Coroner records Accidental Death verdict on former British Mountain Bike Champion

Excessive speed blamed for fatal motorcycle smash

A CORONER has recorded a verdict of 'accidental death' at the inquest into a motorcycle accident which killed British mountain bike champion.

Findings in a report into the fatal crash say Caroline Mackinlay, 37, died after driving at an inappropriate speed on the A4361 on July 31 this year.

Ms Mackinlay, of Westbury, Wilsthire, lost control of her motorbike on a bend and collided with a Vauxhall Astra, while on the way to watch superbike racing at Silverstone.

At the inquest the driver of the vehicle involved in the crash, Tanya Milligan, said: “I remember seeing the bike on my side of the road and thinking that shouldn’t be there but thinking they would correct and move away. The bike was well into my side of the road – almost half. My airbag went off and I thought my car was on fire. I shot out of the car and saw she was behind me.”

Ian Singleton, deputy assistant Wiltshire and Swindon Coroner recorded a verdict of accidental death.
