jail

A HOSPITAL CONSULTANT has been told he faces a custodial sentence after he admitted his dangerous driving caused the death of a motorcyclist.

Mark Meller, 36, of Beaufort Road, Exeter, pleaded guilty to causing the death of Simon Rutley-Frayne by dangerous driving, at Exeter Crown Court.

The court heard Meller overtook cars on the A396 between Exeter and Tiverton on Monday, November 10 last year, when he crashed his Audi A3 into the oncoming motorcycle of Mr Rutley-Frayne.

The court heard how Meller overtook in a dangerous place in conditions described as 'misty'.

Mr Rutley-Frayne, 39, was killed; his wife, who was riding pillion was seriously injured.

In court, Meller admitted he knew he was likely to be handed down a custodial sentence.

Judge Graham Cottle released Meller on bail, telling him: "You must of course read absolutely nothing into that."

Every day you guys have deaths on the road. weather a dangerous biker exceeds the limit or is killed by a car driver. i cant believe it. i mean, england has the most strict laws when youre trying to get a drivers license. only the germans seem to take this more seriously. Right now im living in Mexico City where I commute on a bike and go for weekend rides. There is a strong motorcycle culture and although in order to get a drivers/riders license all you got to do is pay and get your photograph taken, I don't see as many accidents as I saw during my years in England. Furthermore, although there are speed limits, the majority of people don't follow them and it is very common to get passed by cars at speeds of 130+. Why does the UK have that many accidents? I don't understand why people would rather speed at public roads than on the track, when the tracks have such a good quality?

Do you really think Mexican roads are safer, GR?

According to the World Health Organisation, traffic-related road deaths are lower in the UK than Germany, Australia, Canada and the USA. The figures for 2008 read:

UK: 5.4 per 100,000 population/6.3 per 1 billion vehicle km, Germany 6.2/7.4, Australia 7.7/7.9, Canada 9.1/9.2 and USA 14.7/9.0 .

The most recent (WHO) figures I could find for Mexico were 16.1 deaths per 100,000 population in 2005. Unless they've radically  improved they probably still lag behind Europe and the developed world, for precisely the reasons you describe.

Your point about taking speed off road is well taken, but many sports bike owners in the UK are already track day fiends. I think the very fact that a death on the road still makes headlines in the UK probably shows how rare fatal accidents are over here, rather than how common.

You don’t actually believe any of the propaganda put forth by such an objective driven organization as WHO?
