Charge your bike by sunshine

New portable solar panel acts as trickle charger for your motorcycle

A MOTORCYCLE enthusiast has come up with a ‘green’ way of keeping his bike's battery charged up.

Peter Bladen, of alternative energy specialists BSolar, uses a mobile solar panel which plugs into the bike’s battery keeping it charged when the vehicle’s not in use.

He said: “I am strictly a weekend biker and as many enthusiasts will tell you, with modern the bikes the alarm drains the battery fast, meaning that when I used to take the bike out I would have to charge the battery first or run the bike a few times a week to keep things charge up.

“The new solar panel is proving brilliant.  I store the bike in the garden under a water proof cover and the solar panel just sits on the top of this with a lead which plugs directly into the bike’s battery, keeping it on full charge.  The panel only costs £27.99 and will have probably paid for itself in a few months, plus it’s nice to know that even with my motorbike I am doing my bit to be more environmentally friendly.”

The mobile solar panels can be purchased from Halsall-based solar specialists BSOLAR.

This guy has not come up with this idea. These solar units have been on the market for years. Maybe not in the UK ,but China makes millions of them and you can pick them up in auto stores and some camping outlets in most countries. I've been using them on my plant equipment and motorcycles for at leat 4 years.

That's going to be so handy when my bike's in the garage

Been using an Oxford Soleraiser since March, it uses the same plug as my Accumate too, which is handy  So nope, not new.

It has kept the battery charged up nicely though, despite the alarm, I just have the solar panel on the roof of my garage (which has no electricity) and run the cable in above the door to plug into the bike.

All in all, seems a pretty decent solution   Have yet to see how it does over the darker months, but fingers crossed that it will just slow the battery drain if nothing else (the extra capacity battery I installed may also help)

Atleast you would be good at cleaning it.

dazzarilla

12 quid on ebay, they are exactly the same as the Oxford but without the fancy box.

A Honda Rossi rep, wearing red clashing gear, having a garden like that, what do we expect? Exactly, a bloke who sees an earner but sadly long after the rest of the market has. Oh dear, I despair. Serves him right, the £12 ones on fleabay, dazzarilla, seem to sum it up.
