Britain's most dangerous road named

Bikers account for 75% of deaths or serious collisions on Cheshire's Cat and Fiddle

THE CAT and Fiddle in Cheshire is Britain's most dangerous road, says an article on BBC News.

The Road Safety Foundation names the eight-mile stretch of single-carriageway A537 between Macclesfield and Buxton, as the riskiest road in Britain.

The survey states that since 2001, the road has seen 43 fatal or serious collisions, with nearly three-quarters involving motorcyclists.

The position comes despite the introduction of crash barriers along the road by the county council.

More worringly, when motorcycle collisions are removed from the figures, the A537 moves to become one of the safest in the country, the foundation said.

AC

Maybe they need to arrange training for Northern Motorcyclists to learn to ride properly.

I first got my knee down on that road

Above the bar there's a sign that says

"Ride like a nob and you'll die"

OK I ADMIT IT........grrrrrrrrrrrrrr.................

I regularly hide up there behind trees waiting to pounce on unsuspecting bikers. A few fatalities are to be expected.

Cheshire's Cat and Fiddle

I thought it was an obscure reference to female masturbation. Maybe it is then?

This type of press seems to come round about every 4 years or so.Must be something to do with staff changes at these road safety centres. You know someone gets promoted and thinks "I have a new idea!" Ah well the road will have to live with it's name ,good or bad. After all stastistics never lie

Also I wonder if they also take into account the Wildboar clough road and all other routes to the C&F?

btw It's still makes me smile after xxxxx years!

well put, statistics can be doctored to stengthen any arguement just look at the 'mototcyclists are the worse offenders for non-payment of road tax' HA.

anyone whose interested cat and fiddle study on 'police, camera, action' tonight at 9.00.

Why the fcuk do these to55ers in suits allways blame rd's ect......there's no such thing as a "bad" rd....it's the rshole's that use them......US!

I agree with alfa1, there is no such thing as a bad road for cars or bikes. its the idiots that think they are immortal and ride up and down it like knobs that get roads a bad name.

I live in Macclesfield and ride the cat and fiddle frequently, not only am I still alive, I am probably most at risk only having been riding 4 years, Im 46, Im not a 'born again rider'..just born, and everyone keeps telling me Im gonna die just coz I ride a bike up there.

I love the freedom and the experience of biking and I don't have to get my knee down for it to be challenging.

One man, (an ex instructor) said to me recently that If you can ride this road at 45- 50 (i.e within the speed limit on the cheshire section) around every bend without using your brakes then you can call yourself a rider. That said, I am not condoning  excessive speed anywhere, lets face it, rightly or wrongly we all give it some where we can.

This road is not about speed, it's about control. and it is true, if you ride like a knob, you will die. not just on 'The Cat' but anywhere.

AC's tongue in cheek comment about training Northern riders to ride better actually should apply to all the idiots who come from the rest of the country at weekends to try and prove they are hard to all their mates. Most sensible locals keep of it at weekends. We all need to grow up, and realise that we don't help ourselves as a biking community when it comes to bad publicity. They care more about the sheep than a dead biker round here, ask any local farmer.

Davemax,

On reflection, you are probably right about the last 8 years or so. But that may also have summat to do with the local Police helicopter/plane, and the increased Police presence as well. By coincidence,I went up it last Tuesday for a bit of hoon around and saw a lad get pulled by the local Plod....not even mid week! how unlucky can you get?

I work with the Police daily so I have no chance of takin the Rip, and besides, I know I am not skilled enough a rider to attempt kneedowns even if I wanted too! .

Just in case you decide to come over the top via the Stanley Arms route beware a humugous patch of Diesel, or summat VERY slippy about 1Km in on the left. I had a brown trouser moment when i completely lost the front end on it, fortunately I didnt panic brake! and I manged to stay upright, .....just

regards
