BMW: "We are going to take the Japanese head-on"

BMW ARE planning to take the Japanese market 'head on' with their new S1000RR superbike, a company executive has said.

Pieter de Waal, vice president of the BMW’s U.S. motorcycle operations, said the German manufacturer had priced the new four-cylinder superbike to directly compete with the big four: Honda, Suzuki, Yamaha and the Kawasaki.

“We obviously would like to increase our presence beyond a niche player in the U.S.,” said De Waal, refering to the company's strategy of attracting younger blood into their marketplace. The pricing of the new superbike will be a key factor in the bike's success too; the RR will retail for around the same price as a 2010 Yamaha YZF-R1.

“We are going to take the Japanese head-on,”  said de Waal.

I think if BMW motorbikes rebranded themselves they would attract new clientele.  Whether right or not, there is a stigma attached to the BMW brand/logo.  If they re-invented themselves as a separate company to BMW cars with a different logo it would attract people who would normally snub these brilliant bikes purely because of the 'badge'...

It would help if their designers learnt what the word symmetry meant! Headlights, side fairings etc. would all benefit and I might be tempted to buy something that looked a little less odd.

until then - NO

i love the asymetrical look of the bmw's it is logical and sets them apart from the other clones.

The un symettrical design is typical of the german motor manufactureres........;they look to go somewhere were no one has been before.

Get the price right, the performance and reliability already exists, they will sell.

Well........they could make it cheaper by omitting indicators & mirrors as if BMW car drivers are anything to go by they'll never get used. Bloody nice bike though!
