The proof...BMW's new old-style indicator switch

VISORDOWN HAVE taken an exclusive image at the Cologne Show of the new 'push-to-cancel' 3-way indicator switch, which will be fitted to the company's new K1300S.

This dramatic move means the company will drop their controversial, long-standing, three-switch design, which uses controls mounted on both handlebars to operate the indicators.

AC
... but I'm used to it now.... I don't want it changed.... leave it as it is...

They have the three position switch on the K1300R too.

I don't see what the fuss is all about. All it does is separate the control over three buttons, rather than one combined slider and button. I can't see it being any more difficult to operate.

It's probably just lazy journalists who don't want to have to spend time adapting to a different set of controls.

The worst ones are the Harley switches. They've got one on each side (like the Beemers), but an auto-cancelling tilt switch. The trouble is that they don't always auto cancel, so you have to press the indicator button on the side you turned to kill the indicator.

oh FFS.

Talk about pandering to the media.

The 3-button system worked very well and is far less intrusive to your riding than the "standard" (read CHEAP!) 3-position button that you have to lift your palm away from the grip to use.

IME they are criticised almost exclusively by those who don't ride Bee-ems. Sorry to see them 'conform' to an inferior system.

Three months in, on a Beem-eer and it was one of the things I thought would be a problem (three switches). Not in the least, I think it's great, nice and easy and I can keep my grip on the bars.

Here they go, just like the rest........Fixing something that ISN'T broke.

BMW finally catch on to what the rest of the world has been doing for donkeys years and it makes News.

They'll be ditching the opposed twin next.

Having tried both systems I much prefer the 'traditional' BMW 3 button method as I haven't got gorilla hands or a prehensile thumb, thus can't work/slip/control the clutch while using the push-slide indicator single button thingy. In a small way I think that the one-button method can lead to accidents because of either (a) loss of control or (b) failure to indicate or cancel.

This may be a backward step by BMW but I'll reserve judgement until I've had hands-on. This and the use of cheapo Tupperware urine-sample pots, perched on Meccano brackets, on the 'bars, to hold hydraulic fluids, are things that would/do stop me buying a bike - really!

What would be useful, on bikes with screens, would be a fibre optic device that brings the indicator repeater light nearer the rider's eyeline. I've not yet ridden a bike with automatic indicator cancelling that works satisfactorily.

After two years and 18k miles, I still can't find the horn button on my K1200S in an emergency

\v/

Perhaps the 3 button should be an optional extra for those of us that prefer it. I spent 29yrs riding bikes with the single control.

It took a few weeks to get used to the 3 button BMW system but I prefer it now.
