Bikers take action over Westminster Parking Charge

Parking sign not legible? Oh dear, no penalty for you then

It's all down to acid rain, you know...

A NUMBER OF bikers are flouting Westminster City Council's motorcycle parking charge by taking it upon themselves to 'modify' roadside parking charge signs, reports have said.

Last year, Westminster City Council introduced a controversial parking charge system for motorcyclists within the Borough - a move that has caused universal uproar throughout London's motorcycling community, as the bays used to be free-of-charge.

The latest twist in the ongoing battle has revealed the Council's parking charge cannot be enforced if the roadside parking charge information signs have been removed, defaced or if the payment instructions aren't legible. The revelation has prompted many bikers to 'alter' or remove signs making parking in the bays, theoretically, free. Campaigners advise bikers using the 'free' bays should take a photo of the altered sign as proof.

Canadian owned company Verrus, specialists in pay by phone systems in over 90 cities throughout North America and Europe, are working hand-in-hand with Westminster City Council to enforce the parking charges.

The locals, however, are having none of it.

It is always good to see people fighting back at the neverending grab for the taxpayers dollar. It seems like politicians due nothing except think of ways to screw us and keep elected (you would think these aims were contradictory, but apparently we keep electing them). In Toronto, canada we have free bike parking but I wonder for how long. I am sure someone at city hall is looking at it. If it comes I hope we respond like the good people of Westminster.

No To Bike Parking Tax

For more information about the rules and an official letter from Westminster City Council stating that the bays if "obliterated" are free, go to this link: http://bit.ly/6pqsFA

And if you want to read more about the it check out Nutsville which tracks all the seedy goings on at Westminster Council..

Also one thing that hasn't been mentioned here on this site is the 3 investigations being launched against Westminster City Council due to the campaigning by the London motorcyclists, the investigations are:

1. The EU Commissioners; who ensure that competition & codes of procurement are maintained, following a complaint surrounding the awarding of the main contract to Verrus UK Ltd. Official case number: SG-CDC-2008A-7695.

2. The Department of Communities & Local Government; to whom we have demanded a full Public Inquiry since they funded Alastair's pet Partnerships-In-Parking, who we have exposed as being the vehicle by which he wanted to confer all similar Council contracts to Verrus UK Ltd.

3. Office of Fair Trading; who are also investigating an official complaint lodged by us based on the findings listed in our demand for a Public Inquiry. Official case number: EPIC/ENQ/E/75795.

I can't believe London riders have been patient for so long!

The official notobikeparkingtax campaign has bent over backwards to legally force Westminster to own up to this blatant money grabbing scam!

It is not surprising that some citizens out there are realising that Westminster couldn't give a toss and are "taking off their gloves" and picking up a paint brush.

If this was France (bless them!)  the streets would have been gridlocked the next day and the dumb councillor who thought it up sacked months ago!

only one good thing has come out of these charges and that is that it has brought the bikers together in protest. Although it does not affect me personally(yet) I have been on several of the protest rides and they are an experience not to be missed, riding round the west end with several thousand other bikers, blocking up the traffic is a great way to meet fellow bikers and make new friends. Every biker should join up with the no to bike charges campagn and get out there and show the strength of feeling.

I'm so pleased this is happening at last.

Given the recent MP expenses scandals it's become obvious to me that those who we elect to represent us are not listening. Most politicians have become corrupted by what they can get out of the job for themselves forgetting completely why they are in the job.

Having followed the sterling efforts of the NoToBikeParkingTaxes campaign for some months now I think the time has come for direct action which will hammer home the strength of feeling regarding this issue. Enough is enough and we need a seed change in the UK, and those who ride motorbikes need to be seen as voters, and not just another revenue stream to make Canadian companies such as Verrus richer.

Politicians of all parties it's time to wake up to the fact that bikers are voters too, and unlike other roads users they will fight hard when cornered and not accept what by any measure is a daft backwards move to charge M/C's to park. Motorcycles and scooters are part of the solution, a fact which everyone accepts except Westminster City Council it seems.
