Bike thief ordered to pay back £40,000

Conman escapes jail after pleading guilty to profiteering from stolen motorcycles

A COURT has ordered a conman to pay back more than £40,000 after he was found guilty of selling stolen motorbikes to unsuspecting buyers for profit.

Yesterday, Luton Crown Court heard how Gary Smith, of Hardwicke Place, London Colney, received stolen motorcycles, before selling them to customers for a profit.

Smith, 38, was arrested by Police in November 2007 after a customer discovered the machine he'd purchased from the accused had been stolen.

Investigating officer Detective Sergeant Chas Moore, said: “Nobody should benefit from crime, and I am satisfied that Smith has been ordered to pay more than £40,000 for his offences. His actions meant a number of people, who thought they were buying a motorcycle in good faith, were actually getting stolen property. I’m pleased for these victims that they will receive some compensation for their loss.”

Smith pleaded guilty to one count of possessing criminal property, eight counts of handling stolen goods and four counts of fraud by false representation at an earlier hearing.

He was sentenced to 39 weeks in jail, suspended for two years, and ordered to carry out unpaid work for 250 hours.

Smith was told he must pay over £7,500 in compensation to the people who bought the bikes in good faith.

Yeah, but if he was caught doing over 100mph, he'd have got 12mths in jail suspended for nothing, and locked up straight away ?!!

I expect he'll plead poverty and be allowed to pay it back at a tenner a week, meanwhile the poor sods he fleeced will still be out of pocket. Scumbag.

antimagneto

Bike thieves should be tortured to death and hung on railings outside bike shops to decompose. If you've put time into your bike, or even if you haven't it's the most dear inanimate item we own. No true motorcycle enthusiast could ever steal one.

We had a spate of bike thefts round here which had a similar 'modus operandi' involving a local bike shop. If you're new to biking, ask around and only use a shop you can trust. There are plenty, especially the ones where all the staff ride and it's not usually a 'gin palace' either. Only trouble is, stealth taxes, H&S cobblers, big groups, internet sales of stuff sold by folk working out of their garage etc are all thinning them out.

Remember, E-Bay won't fit a crank for you - use them don't lose them!

This bloody soap box gets higher every day....sorry.
