MOTORCYCLE racing is to return to Donington Park in August 2010, Visordown can reveal.

The Tom Wheatcroft Trophy classic bike meeting will be held on 14th-15th August 2010.

The return to racing has been announced following yesterday's news that a 25-year lease has been signed with the Adroit Group and the famous East Midlands track.

The circuit went into administration last year following the collapsed attempt to host the British Formula 1 Grand Prix, headed by well-intentioned, if incompetent, businessman Simon Gillett, boss of Donington Ventures Leisure Ltd.

Steve Watton, operations manager for the Adroit Group, told Visordown: "We're extremely excited about motorcycle racing's return to Donington Park. It's also fitting the first event will be held in honour of former owner Tom Wheatcroft, to celebrate bike racing's return to the historic East Midlands track."

Donington's track surface will need repairing in 16 separate places before racing can resume, but Adroit is confident the repairs will be completed in time.

"Our plan is to return Donington to its former glory with a safe and steady plan; we're not going to promise things we can't deliver."

When asked whether the circuit was hoping to reattract large-scale motorcycle racing events, Mr Whatton said:

"We want British and World Superbikes back on Donington Park's calendar. The team here are committed to making this happen."

Donington's back on track. At last.
