Bike parking charges threat for Camden

Council believed that free parking 'effectively encourages a shift to motorcycle use'

A CAMDEN council document from October 2011 showed that the borough had plans to introduce the Westminster model for bike parking charges.

Submitted to the Culture and Environment Scrutiny Committee, the council members decided not to follow the proposal and dropped charging from the parking policy review.

In the original report - titled 'Recommendations of the Parking Policy Review' - the council's belief was that  motorcycles are the only free form of motorised transport in the borough, which 'effectively encourages a shift to motorcycle use'.

The plan was to implement the charges south of Euston Road, and depending on its success it could have been extended to other areas of the borough, alongside Hackney and Islington who also indicated interest in the policy.

Westminster council introduced bike parking charges in 2008. In answer the campaign No To Bike Parking Tax was set up by motorcyclists to tackle the scheme with demonstrations and through the High Court.

If road tax breaks don't have the same rules as cars, then why should parking?

Am all up for being equal if they start treating us like equals across the board, not just where they see fit.

Sometimes you get sick and tired of reading about London and its problems. The rest of us just get on with taking action and not whining.

Started with westminster - moved to other boroughs and soon it will be wherever you are hugh. Then you'll whine and wonder why nothing more was done to stop it.... :0)

Do you guys have something like the AMA to lobby for motorcyclist rights on your side of the pond?

We've got a group called "No To Bike Parking Tax" (NTBPT)

It's the longest running protest in the history of Westminster. They've succeeded in getting the parking rate brought down but not in abolishing it..

Well; you lot get on with it. Nobody else gives a stuff.

You will when your getting parking fees and tickets.
Your coming across as a car driver not a 2 wheeler.

Lets see your "Action" you take.
Waving your large skidmarked pants about?

Newt - learn to spell will you? You 're coming across like someone with learning difficulties.

Saddle sniffer.

Hugh, where do you hail from? Sorry, a misspelling - Where do you 'heil' from? :0)

Just want to remember so I can have a chuckle when the parking charges hit your area...

Damn, I already make a choice of a 5 min walk to park in Camden rather than Westminster, looks like it's going to cheaper to walk all the way to work soon!

So where's BMF, MAG, MCIA on this? And are we heading into a future where I have to pre-register my bikes with each council in London individually in case I have to park in their borough?

Bike parking charging is a problem we can't solve. We'll get no backing from car drivers - they have to pay a fortune, so why shouldn't we? - and despite help from cabbies and Westminster residents and shopkeepers, the Westminster campaign failed because the council could easily demonstrate how much extra money they'd pull in during a lean time. No council in the world is going to turn that opportunity down.

And so the parking charge will roll out across the country as sure as eggs is eggs. And all those people who say 'it doesn't affect me' will be crying about how much it's costing them soon. Tough shit buddy, you should have joined us when you had the chance.

4000+ bikers descended on Westminster during the heat of the campaign, but if the lazy bastards who said 'it won't affect me' had joined in we could have been 10,000 strong, and no council could have ignored us. But you were sat on your arses. Now the parking charge is spreading, and in five years' time every biker will have to pay in every town, because every council will adopt this easy moneymaking scheme.

Don't come here bleating about it, cos you had your chance to do something.
