Bike ban in French cities?

Worrying legislation from France's Ecology Minister Nathalie Kosciusko-Morizet

by Visordown News

France's Ecology Minister Nathalie Kosciusko-Morizet has proposed a ban on older bikes and cars in eight French cities from 2012 onwards according to French newspaper le Parisien.

When we say “older” we're not talking about smoky old strokers but any bike made before 1 July 2004, which would actually account for a large proportion of the entire motorcycle population. Cars get off a bit lighter, with anything made since 1997 still given the OK.

The cities involved in the scheme, a pilot project which is intended to go on for three years, are; Paris, Lyon, Nice, Bordeaux, Grenoble, Clermont-Ferrand, Saint Denis and Aix-en-Provence.

Of course there's no guarantee her crusade will be a success – the scheme could yet be called off – but if it goes ahead it sets a scary precedent for other European cities.

If your French is any good, you can read the original story here.

Imagine if the Italian government wanted to introduce this idea in their cities

"Eight million cars over 13 years of age, 1.6 million motorbikes and 300,000 trucks too old to be equipped with particulate filters are in the viewfinder of the department. "

I've had cat's on my bikes since 2000... doubt it'll ever happen tho'.

We already have that in London, it's called the low emission zone, another one of Ken's ideas to spunk a shite load of our money!

What fucks me off is 'cars get off a bit lighter'. Whichever way you dice it, most cars rarely carry more than one person and kick out more pollution than any bike. Plus bikes are smaller, so take up less space. If you want to reduce pollution and congestion in cities, get rid of cars.

Same thought process sees 60mpg cars subject to £0 road tax, but 100mpg+ scooters go up.

It won't happen and even if they try that crap here I'll burn down the world in anger.

Presumably her plan will be updated every three or four years so that no bike older than 7 or 8 years stays on the road.

If the scheme had been running for years in the UK, no less than 7 brand new motorcycles would have had to be manufactured to replace the 30 year old XT550 I use for commuting.

I know the old girl's not that green (my bike I mean, not the French politician), but she's  a darn site greener than the manufacture and disposal of seven new motorcycles.

Another politician who's well paid to think things through properly singularly failing to think things through properly.

Presumably on a bike older than 10 years old you mean?

I wonder if the French Police's bikes would be included - many of these are "old" models from those I've seen.  Another ill conceived "green" initiative that will cost money to introduce and police.  Can't see it going ahead, but then who knows...

I live in France and there is about as much chance of this happening as me landing on the sun, most of the bikes around here in the south west are at least 10 years old with lots of Brit classics, as they dont use salt on the roads in the winter cars or bikes dont rust plus the French love bikes and old cars  there will be riots  stopping Paris

Shamless grab for headlines. This is possibly the most ridiculous notion and will hopefully result in her political meltdown. What's her plan for policing this load of rot? Ill-concieved and unnecessarily targeting bikers - AGAIN!

Someone tell her to make better use of her time and go hug a tree!

I live in France, too,  and have just bought a 2002 Hornet.  I shall join the protests.  Could be a good day out.
