A BIKER previously banned eight times from driving escaped a custodial sentence yesterday – even though he'd been caught twice over the drink-drive limit.
South East Suffolk magistrates heard how James Lewis, 24, was caught riding while disqualified, with no insurance or MoT, without a crash helmet and carrying a pillion passenger, when he was stopped by Police earlier this year. He was also double the legal drink-drive limit.
Tests revealed Lewis had 81 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, magistrates heard. The legal limit is 35 micrograms.
Lewis was slapped a 22-week jail term suspended for two years and also banned from driving for two years. He was put on probation for 18 months, told to complete a substance abuse programme and ordered to do 100 hours’ unpaid work.
And to cap it all, after yesterday’s hearing Lewis’s mother was asked if he ought to be ashamed about the number of times he had been banned.
She replied: “Why should he? Everyone else does it.”
