Australia's motorcycle fatalities double in 2010

75 per cent of motorcyclists involved in a fatal are at fault, say Police

POLICE in Victoria, Australia, are becoming increasingly concerned about biker safety after recent figures revealed the death rate involving motorcyclists on the state's roads has doubled in the last 12 months.

Thirty-two motorcyclists have died on Victoria's roads this year, up from 17 from the same period in 2009. The force claims 75 per cent of motorcyclists involved in a fatal accident are at fault.

Local motorcyclists claim they are being unfairly targetted by the state's Police but the force is now issuing photos of offenders committing high-risk stunts in order to back up their anti-speeding campaign. The most recent image shows a biker, clad in shorts and a T-shirt, pulling a wheelie on an off-road machine at over 70mph.

Deputy Commissioner Ken Lay says some of them are still ignoring safety campaigns.

"Look, there are some motorcyclists out there who simply don't get it," he said.

"They engage in behaviour that is highly risky. They don't wear safety gear. They have no regard for other road users and as a result they die."

And? Is it not their choice what they do with their lives? While all the police would have us wrapped up in cotton wool, there are some out there who want to show more than ever that they are in charge of their lives still. The more you try to control a child, the more beligerrent they become. Try leaving them alone, it's really none of your business, and you'll find they'll behave a lot better.

CREMMY
Very disappointing indeed that Visordown would run this PR crap from the Victorian State Police with no further examination. The Victorian, NSW and QLD Police have never got over two things where they were seeking even greater powers than they already enjoy: the first was a return to front number plates. They have tried to disseminate this " fiction " that Australian motorcyclists are, " getting away with something " that car drivers cannot. Front rego plates were dropped in the late 1970's for the same reasons that are valid today. Because we had no have front-facing speed cameras back then is stiff cheese. The secon, is that they wanted ALL motorcycle gangs to be " proscribed " - i.e. not allowed to consort, accompany , meet with or ride with one another. In other words - a " fascist " control that could be abused for any reason or by some over-zealous jerk of a PC. " Speed " per se and the rider get blamed all the time here. The fact is that nothing has changed since the ground-breaking and truly accurate " Hurt Report " in the USA back in the early 1980's. Approximately 70% of ALL fatal and serious injury crashes to motorcycle riders are caused by " other " vehicles and their drivers. Shame on you VD ....
