WELL-KNOWN 'anti-speed' Tory MP, Nicholas 'Fatty' Soames, grandson to Winston Churchill, has been banned from driving after his third speeding offence in four years.
Soames was clocked travelling at 51mph in a 30mph zone in his Audi in Handcross, near his Mid Sussex constituency. He has been issued with a two week ban from driving, given a £666 fine, and ordered to pay £85 court costs and a £15 victim surcharge.
In an unbelievably brazen case of 'one rule for me, another for you', Soames lists 'fighting speeding traffic' among his campaigns on his official website. In May 2009, he called publically for the county council to 'act on road speed'.
Soames has subsequently apologised.
Incredibly, this is not the first time Soames has been banned from driving. He was disqualified for two months in May 2008 for riding his Honda quad bike and trailer on a public road without insurance. Soames was caught on camera riding the off-road bike while carrying three children and a pregnant woman, following a meeting of the Crawley and Horsham Hunt near his home on New Year's Day. Magistrates were told at the time of the offence that Soames had nine penalty points on his licence from three endorsements for fixed penalty offences.
Speaking to the East Grinstead Courier & Observer on his latest brush with the law, Soames reassured the public: 'it won't affect me, because I am only banned for two weeks.'
