Amazing story of collapsing Aprilia Tuono wheel

Visordown regular gets off unscathed after front wheel drama

Posted: 23 March 2007
by Visordown News

A BLOWOUT while riding your bike is probably the last thing you'll ever want to experience, but Visordown regular, Docca, experienced far worse.

While riding his 2004 Aprilia Tuono back from work he heard a bang and the front wheel immediately went flat causing to bike to shake violently, almost going into a tank slapper.

After he made it to the side of the road, Docca was shocked to see that his tyre had not just suffered a sever and rapid deflation, but that his entire rim had buckled, with a two inch section of the rim completely missing.

The bike is a two owner 2004 model, with a full service history and under 20,000 miles on the clock.

Docca told Visordown: "Only damage is the wheel. Thankully. Nothing else was even scratched. I've no idea how the rim ruptured like that, really, I don't. I couldn't see anything on the road."

Have wheels lightened to the point where their structure cannot compensate for public roads?

I know that every year manufacturers make the bikes lighter - do they shave weight off the wheels?

I remember Robert Dunlop's TT crash where the back wheel shattered; would hate to think this could become commonplace.

Then again, possibly just a one in a billion chance.

Glad to hear rider wasnt pitched off. Replacement wheel wont be cheap and I doubt he'd trust one second hand from a breaker's yard

I didn't do it from a wheelie, and i didn't fall off going round a straight road either.

No idea how it happened. New wheel £420

I would imagine a previous owner, if not yersen, has hit something at a fair rate and put a hairline fracture in it.
It may even have been rolled back into shape at some stage.
There's not much (note not none) chance of it happening because of a manufacturing fault.

A metalurgist (?) would be able to tell you if it has happened due to an impact, and if it has been reshaped (and if it has been reshaped properly) by looking at the remains.

Thanks Abel.

I've received loads of advice about such an investigation via the thread about this incident that appeared on the forums here. Some very informative private messages from other members of this site have given me plenty of options to enquire about.

Having said that, i'm more than OK with the idea of just 'getting on with it' and getting back out on the road.

Academic interest wants to know if you saved the piece of the wheel that broke of the wheel. If so, have the piece and wheel xrayed to see if there is a casting flaw. I would have the rear wheel checked also.

In the 1970's Cook Nielson of Cycle World Magazine, bought a set of Camponola cast wheels for his Ducati Desmo Super Sport (He won Daytona 1977 on this bike). For some obscure reason he had them xrayed and they were found to to be flawed and not race worthy. Last I heard, he still has them as wall hangers. Just a thought. If there is proof of flaws in the wheel or wheels, I would think the wheel manufacture would be liable for their replacement.
