Additional corners planned for Donington Park

East Midlands circuit loses MotoGP venue but gains new corners to host F1 Grand Prix

Trackday fans start celebrating now

DONINGTON PARK is to get a new series of additional corners that will mimic the iconic Craner Curves as part of a development programme for the forthcoming F1 GP that will move from Silverstone to the Derby circuit from 2010 on.

Speaking at the weekend, Donington Park CEO Simon Gillett said: “Let’s not underestimate this, it’s not a simple thing to do, but it’s not as big as people think.

“We’ve got to make some changes to the track but it’s fair to say that if I touch anything from Redgate to McLeans i.e Craner Curves then I think I would be lynched. So everyone can rest assured that that’s not going to happen.

“There’s going to be a new infield section adding about another half mile to the circuit to increase the lap time and give another Craner style corner.

“There will also be a new F1 pit and paddock development and changes to the circuit’s infrastructure.

“Unfortunately, there’s not a mystery fairy godfather out there with a £100m cheque to fund this. I wish there was. This work will be done as a venture capital opportunity.”

Over two months ago Visordown exclusively revealed that Donington Park was to lose MotoGP in favour of Silverstone from 2010. Click below to read the full story.

I Hate to think what the congestion will be like trying to get 90,000+cars down the local roads around Donnington.

Maybe visordown should read their own forums for their next scoop.

Might nip up there and offer a bike taxi sevice to all the people desperate to get to East Midlands airport. How much do you think they would pay to make it to their flight. Download and the Renault festival created havoc.

If Moto GP goes back to Silverstone it should be great for us getting in and out of the circuit.

Hasnt Bernie been down this road before? I know Im getting old and the memory is shot but didnt he promise the race to Brands a few years ago, they grabbed it and cocked it up and guess who stepped in to 'save the day'.  Good old Silverstone.

Bernie says there is a mystery donor, Donington say its venture capital. Whatever happens it means jobs so perhaps Gordon and the other elves might pick up on the idea and give them a few quid from the John Lewis pot. fat chance

Absolutely, but who will want to go?

Not a very inspiring circuit I agree.

I agree it needs a few additions, more helicopter parking, av gas point, Harrods outlet, toilet seats (male, I 'm fed up of lining up for the ladies) to name but 10. How in gods name will they get 2000 plus helicopter deliveries made on race day with the Irishmans planes dropping in every 5 minutes? Did they forget that there is a bloody great airport next door that all but shuts when the Moto GP is on.

Or is the mystery man an airline owner and its a cunning plot to build a 2nd runway?

Mmmmmmm???????

Apparantly Ecclestone has bought the lease on Donny , allegedly.

It won't work at Donny unless they put in a dual carriageway linking the circuit to the M1 and M42

If there is to be a new infield loop, will that spoil the existing good view of the circuit from the top ?

so many problems so little time , the tree huggers might object and delay things like they did at Brands of course.  Janet Street Porter  for  example , the bikers friend NOT

The problem at Brands was proximity to housing (there are houses just outside the GP loop, and a need to remove quite a few trees, which apparrently is unacceptable, even though the Highways agency can remove entire woods for the A2 and M20 widening schemes.

Don't believe Bormula One will actually make it to Donington. This is all part of the predictable Ecclestone circus that dominates the most overated motorsport on the planet.

Let's face it the criticisms of Silverstone over many years by the tiny tycoon, accompanied by threats of moving the whole sorry show to some desert/ jungle location, are part of maintaining the anoraks interest and keeping sponsors on board. No way does Donington offer any improvement, alterations or not.

Any bets that Bormula One won't appear at Donington ?

Its time that Donington was altered Get rid of the Foggy Esses, and put in a long left right left "chicane through was is the paddock and down to the old loop, make a spoon curve and back up to Redgate which will become a left hander And then rebuild the paddock in the centre of the circuit. with a new tunnel ala Thruxton/Brands.

Keep the MotoGP at Donington and keep boring old F1 where it belongs. We get a great new track at Donington and keep the MotoGP with a fast interesting circuit
