311mph: new motorcycle speed record

Turbo-charged Hayabusa sets the new benchmark

A NEW motorcycle top speed record was set at 311.945mph.

The record was set at the Loring Timing Association's land speed races held at the Loring Air Force Base in Limestone, Maine.

Bill Warner of Wimauma, Florida hit a speed of 311.945 mph on his turbo-charged 1299cc Suzuki. Although faster speeds have been obtained from 'streamliner' motorcycles, where the rider is enclosed in the vehicle, this is the fastest speed obtained on a conventional motorcycle.

The previous speed record was set at 278.6mph last October by Warner himself. He said his current motorcycle was 'built for speed and that's what it did'. A man of few words, then.

Good to see that it maintained the Hayabusa look and resisted the need to look like a 'streamliner'. Conventional motorcycle; give me a break.

I'd bet my life a zx14 would put up bigger numbers.
Damn squids!

It’s got a Hayabussa chassis, conventional running gear, front and rear, and the guy sits on it (hands first), rather than in it (feet first). It’s not a streamliner.

And no a ZX14 wouldn’t put up bigger numbers. There are several land racing ZX14’s but none appear to be able to reliably post the numbers that the hyper-tuned Bussa’s seem to. It’s the same today as it ever has been in the world of drag and land racing, if you want to tune a production motorcycle engine to reliably produce idiotic amounts of horsepower choose a big Suzuki.

Beginning at sunrise on March 6 (which was actually this afternoon here in the States) during the annual Australia Speed Week in Lake Gairdner, the Top-1 "Ack Attack" team of American motorcycle racing veterans will be only the third team in 27 years to try and establish a new FIM (Federation Internationale de Motorcyclisme) World Land Speed Record and enter the Guinness World Records. Sponsored by Burlingame, Calif.-based Top Oil Products Co., and led by noted motorcycle designer Mike Akatiff, the team’s record run--with a custom-built 900-hp streamliner--will be witnessed by officials from FIM, the international sanctioning organization that certifies motorcycle world land-speed records. The Top-1 group has already set an unofficial motorcycle land-speed record of 328.3 mph on October 16, 2004 at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Wendover, Utah, which was certified by Bonneville Nationals Inc. and the Southern California Timing Association.--Ken Juran
