30-year-old Porsche motorcycle concept unearthed

Old design pictures show German car manufacturer's two-wheel ideas

Integrated kneepads? No wonder the idea went belly up

A RADICAL 1970s Porsche motorcycle concept has been unearthed an put online.

The concept was created in 1979, an era when Porsche flirted with the idea of breaking into the motorcycle market. Sadly the company's interest in two-wheelers went no further.

Porsche's take on their design:

'Comfort, safety and protection from mud and water were prime considerations, not the usual fascination with speed: The engine, running gear and wheels are carefully shielded by streamlined fairings to keep the rider clean and obviating the need for special clothing under normal weather conditions. The handlebars are heatable and adjustable. So is the seat, depending on the rider’s size or requirements. In case of collision, integrated kneepads carry the rider over the obstacle. A supplementary luggage rack may replace the passenger seat.'

Funky idea, although we're not too sure about the aerodynamic properties of the test rider!

IIRC (and I might not be) it was 'strapless'.  Kinda clamped round your neck.

that would be little protection in an off

And why would I buy a Porsche motorcycle for that?  May as well buy a Fiat Panda.

What do you want?  Discomfort, danger and to get covered in filth?

"The usual fascination with speed".  On the others, I'm not overly concerned either way.

It might come off, as its only gripping your neck:rather than the locked by a strap , as is normal, not that normal is better, but in this case.

Why do you imagine it would be more likely to 'come off' than by fastening a strap round your chin?

WelshHaydn

I reckon my Schuberth would stay on, without the strap. Unless I flip it open, there's no way I can get it on or off.

That Porsche bike though, it's surely just a wild concept. They can't have seriously thought about putting it into production.

Not the same helmet - but have a look at how the GPA Strapless worked.

Fraggy

What a load of shit.

"In case of collision, integrated kneepads carry the rider over the obstacle."

Fucking appalling lack of thought. How would that have helped me in my only two life-threatening collisions, both times rear ended by women in Volvo and BMW respectively.

"not the usual fascination with speed"

And such fucking hypocrisy from Porsche!

If that's the best they can do, they better stick to making jumped up beetles, that doesn't require too much in the way of brain cells.

I've thought it through. I prefer the Schuberth (never thought I'd type that) and the trike. Leave Teutonic bikes to MZ, BMW and KTM, desirable supercar builder blokes. You haven't got a fuggin clue about 'cycles.

abjectblitz
I dont think any of those ideas are bad, could do with a bike to do the opposite of what the Japs are doing.

I did say might, personally I think the strap a beter idea

Porsche designed the motor for the Harley Vrod. Not the first time the yanks have been to the germans and asked them how do we do it.
