My mate next door, has just bought one of these:

to restore.

It is a 1983, costing £180.

Any tips ?

What's the nearest Haynes manual, for a start ?

Here it is.

Cheers.

I thought the 650 Kat was a shafty?

Ok, try www.haynes.co.uk

Category - Motorcycle Manuals

Keyword - Suzuki

13th down in left-hand column

An exhaust system would help too

It's a 550, and it's not a shaftie. In fact, at the moment, it's not even a chainie.

The chain is in a box.

its a 550 kat not a 650.

GS550 manaul is a better bet.

Bog basic UMJ bread and butter stuff , tough as old boots, recomended.

Weak spots.

Regulator pops
Generator pops
Battery goes pops.
General electrical rot.

Drain and check the oil, people abuse these bikes on the grounds their tough, Shims prob havent been done since Adam was in short trousers. Sprocket nuts come loose. Bolts snap in the rocker cover. Head sticks on. Oil leaks. Seat base rots (tho the Kat may be plastic). Horrible headlight/indicator switch needs taking off. Brakes seize. frame paint is rubbish, shocks are crap.

Engine makes the Guzzi motor look underbuilt.

Good bikes.

IF the bike is running prob 99% of this is already sorted.

It's not running. In fact it's not been running for 12-18 months.

The headlight and clocks are broken, it's been dropped. It's going to be a long term 'project', so I'll have several more questions, no doubt.

Expect electical problems then. its eworth checking if it has the orignial regulator, if it does i would consodor swapping it over.

Im told the geny runs in oil so the normal failure mode is poeple let theo il level drop and it overheats , give it resistance check on the stator.

I had one of them for my first "big" bike, red one it was and I loved it. Not a lot to add apart from to echo the comments about the electrics being a bit suspect.

I'll buy it off you when it's beautiful....

By the time this thing is beautiful, everyone will have their own personal spaceship.
