Stripped the engine

I've stripped the engine and I thought it was a 2 stroke

There's black oil everywhere, on the powervalve and powervalve, on the exhaust socket, at the frount of the base gasket and on the top of the front of the crankcases.

I cant renmebr there being this much oil everywhere last time it was stripped.

Good news is the rings are ok, so why do its rattle, stutter when reved hard and not rev over 10k?

I'm not familiar with the Aprilla set up - could it be sucking the gearbox oil through a buggered seal?

It will be oily in the places you mentioned. The oil pump is dumping a load of oil into the combustion chamber every stroke and it's getting burnt (hence's the blackness). If there is excess oil, either the oil pump is out of adjustment and pumping too much oil, or as Fasty say, the crank seal on the drive side could have gone and it's sucking in gearbox oil. Simple way to check that is see if the gearbox oil level is low. It should stay constant in a smoker unless you have a leak somewhere.

Going to check gearbox oil tonight.

Dont renember there being that much oil everywhere last time though.

Also I had the head off about 3 weeks ago and the top of the piston was going brown ( done about 2000km ) and now its black.

Spark plug is dark apart from the tip which is almost white ( running lean ?).

Since the rings are ok, what else would cause it to stutter when revings hard?

air leak, possibly at the exhaust mount? that would make it run lean, and could explain why u have a lot of oily residue out the front of the engine.

Hi

My guess would be the exhaust mount leaking, as that would explain the oil escaping.

All the best

Gearbox oil level is ok.

It does seem to be the exhaust leeking where it goes onto the exhaust socket.

Any reason why I shouldn't use exhaust sealant to seal the exhaust?

Exhaust sealant will last about 5 minutes. Use the manufacturer's recommended seal and live with a bit of leakage.

Could your oil pump be stuck on full stroke?

There is no seal. The exhaust is held onto the exhaust socket by springs.

Doesn't seem to be using too much oil. You can see the exhuast is leaking because of all the oil over the engine below the exhuast but none above.

Hi

You are meant to use a high temperature silocon sealeant around the exhaust mount.

Say's nothing about that in the manual. So this goes on the join between the exhaust and the mount. Can I get it from halfords?

I take it the pipe is a slip fit over/into a collar on the barrel? The manufacturer won't recommend any sealant, just rely on the slipfit sealing properly. Fine from new with a nice tight fit, but as the two parts wear, leaks appear.

Get a tube of silicone sealant from B&Q! It doesn't even need to be high temp, just ordinary bathroom silicone sealant. I use it on the race RD, no leaks (17:1 compression and running very hot!), the road RD (a legendary fix for leaky Allspeeds) and even sealed the pipework on the Fazer with it!

You need to read the plug at the base of the porcelain, not the tip. Without seeing it I couldn't say for sure but I would suspect it's running ok if the overall colouring is dark. Also a well used plug won't tell you much, it really needs to be a new one with only a little use.
