My son is becoming frustrated because his MT50 will not keep up with his mates DT50.
Does anyone know if the MT50 is restricted, and if it is how can it be un-restricted?
Many thanks, Ride safe.

I had one in 1980 and it only done 34mph.They are prone to clogging the exhaust with gunge on the wide bend just before the p/tank.I was told that they are made that way and hav'nt got a restrictor that can be taken out.Big bore kits are about for them.
They had one in the moped race at the BMF on Sunday and that was quick..so dont give up:burnout:

ok i think the bike you are talking about is a 2 stroke if so take the exhaust off and soak it in a bath of caustic soda (don't let the dog drink it ) then flush all parts thru , USE RUBBER GLOVES DO NOT GET IT ON YOUR SKIN, also check the exhaust port as carbon and oil will have built up there scrape off CAREFULLY hopefully this will cure the problem
P.s. I don't know what this will do to paint/chrome etc but it was in the manual for my old VZ50

Then there's no easy way to derestrict it fully. The ignition retards instead of advances when you get to about 7000 rpm. You used to be able to buy deristricted CDI units for most of the 50's but I don't know whether they still make them. Fitting an aftermarket pipe and jet & filter kit will free some power but it won't be as quick as a DT/RD if you havn't done the ignition mod.

If they're still on the go, Taffspeed (in Wales, obviously) used to sell tuning bits for tiddler 2 strokes, you could try them.

Hope this helps.

Hi

For the MT50 if he is over 17 then you could fit a Honda H100 engine

All the best

I had an MB50, mate had a MT50, and another mate had a H100. Both the mopeds were dog-slow and even with baffles out, lightweight reed valves and silver paint on the frame they still wouldn't go above 35mph. I went slightly quicker on the MB50 coz I was so much skinnier.

The engine from the H100 looked like it would bolt straight in as they all appeared to share the same frame. An idea I toyed with for a whole year. By then of course, it was much easier to just buy a bigger bike...

I like your face. It reminds me of you

that would be a straight fit, no doubt...

Hi

Problem with the MTX80 is that it is liquid cooled, so you would need to find somewhere to put the radiator and all the plumbing to go with it

I had an MT50 years ago
I had the exhaust port opened out a bit, it was noticably faster after that

I fitted a Gianelli exhaust for extra speed cost £69 fitted in 1990, and it did work, but gave a silly powerband with a HUGE flatspot in mid range, that caused the bike to be difficult to ride in windy conditions, it was hard to hold a gear and speed, coz the engine would just drop off

Honda 50's always used to be the most restricted - my mates had yamaha and kawasaki and they were miles faster

I've got a freshly rebored barrel, and piston kit, never fitted, and also a carburettor if anyone wants them for an MT5.

My mate had a Honda stepthru 50, city express or something, and that was miles faster than the MT5

Save up for a bigger bike when old enough or for a car

Thanks for the reply arfurvisor.

How much o you want for those bits?

Thought about gearing up by 1 tooth on the front sprocket. Any thoughts on that.

dunno really, not sure about how you'd get 'em, they're free if collected......................
do you know anyone in the area??? (M'bro, Cleveland)

ill dig it all out and report on its condition, its about 8 months since i seen 'em

i could photo bits and email photo's if necessary

i did something with the sprockets too, but cant remember what, does up from 12 to 13 seem right, i remember it was the little sprocket as it was a couple of quid, makes you cog the old box a bit when its windy though, but adds around 4 or 5mph i think

Apparently the MT5 is one of the slowest restricted 50s but with a bit of work can me made a lot quicker. They sell em in Europe and they are about 7bhp. Some mates of mine raced one in the Moped Mayhem at the BMF show. The inlet has a couple of cast ribs that prevent the upper reed stops being opened. Grind these out and open the stops. Also a bigger carb (18-20mm) will help. Not sure if there's a restriction in the exhaust - check the downpipe and remove as necessary. The pipe itself is pretty good, some of the quick ones at the BMF were still running std pipes. Decent big bore kit's really the next step (70cc Malossi or Polini - check ebay), followed by a professional port job. Alter the gearing as necessary. Try www.50cc.nl they have loads of tuning goodies and a forum with lots of useful info.

I'm running a 22mm carb (off a KH250) on my son's DT50MX, with a Polini big bore kit and it runs fine - starts, idles and doesn't bog so you can easily run a bigger carb.

You may be better off finding one from a 100cc, these are usually 18-20mm and maywork better than a bored out standard carb.

I have a mt50 it has a 65cc big bore kit, import exhaust, bigger main jet and a k&n filter. It does about 50

2 stroke - because one stroke isn't enough and four strokes waste two

The k&n probely wont make much difference. I noticed a slight diffrence in sound. If u do want one for the its a 38mm diameter. heres the link for the one i got:
www.filterpower.co.uk/universal/kn_round_clamp.htm

It was £19.39 inv vat and postage.

You can get a new reed valve (think thats what they are called) which might help a bit. I put some (they are penauts, £5) on my MT5 years ago. The ones on there are a thin metal and you can get some that are a bit thinner thus allowing a bit more fuel into the engine.
