i have got a cbx 550 that my dad left me when he died, it was perfect and in complete origanal condition, just after a required this vehicle it was stolen but i got it back 2 days later with plenty of damage i decided to do it up again but not origanal, i fixed and re built the damage to clocks, lights, seat, engine and body work the ENGINE how ever will not run properly as the starter turns when it feels like it it starts runs hot then stops to make it run again i have to buy new plugs everytime,i`ve done head gaskets exuast gaskets and had the carbs set and balanced but keep having this problem i now dont know what could be causing this defect i`m really pissed off with this bike now and need some help
is it worth spending all this money on a bike that 20 odd years old, hhhhhheeeeeeellllllpppppppppp

hi, as you were left the bike i would restore it back to concours original condtion and leave it in the front room on display. I am afraid i dunno much about the cbx 550, however...
I take it the engine is aircooled? if so the engine is getting very hot you say and the starter will not turn it over? if thats the case sounds like it is seizing. Could be down to all manner of things. But the first thing you need to do is a compression check and find out whats going on. Any more info on the prob?

Hello sir,

Im frequently in Preston so i may be able to help you out.

The CBX is a ok bike, go ok too.

form what you tell us it could be a few things.

Ignition timing, does it stat ok, does it make a lot of noise?

Carburation is too weak, is it getting hot very quickly, does it start ok?

Lubrication, whats the oil pressure like, is the bike noisy?

the starter relay clicks alot but thats it every now again thestarter will work and with new plugs fire up straight away. it is quite noisey.

i had the carbs none by a honda specialists in wigan.

oil is nt the problem as i`ve done the usual checks, plugs foul up after its been ran and it gets really hot really quick

So the oil pressure light is on to begin with but when you start it goes out?

What do thew plugs look like?

Im not familier with the carbs but i suspect you hace carburation problem. is the choke mech ok?

yeah the oil light stays on until you fire it up, the plugs just go black not oily i tested the plugs on the head and they do nothing put in new one and it works, the choke claws that sit on the plungers in the carbs where bent and uneven so i straightened them there are now even and work properly put still had the same problem though this has confused me as i am normaly quite good with these things

One of my brothers had a CBX 550 I never even saw it but my XJ 550s oil light is on when I turn it on untill it fires, I just figured it showed the bulb worked

i confidently predict that its the..... fuel tap (asumeing u seemed to have checked everything else!)... try pulling fuel line off and seeing if it flows fuel at a rate concomitant with good running.. ie flows freely and dont stop after a while.

sidecar jon, if you take my advice you are in deeper trouble than i thought.

the fuel tap works of the compression off the engine like an old bike

Are your plugs a sooty black??

Had probs with my Kwak Z750. Bad starting, bad running, uneaven, also had big trouble starting when warm.
My plugs were really sooty, (apart from one which hadn't fired at all.), anyway,,, it took 5 thourough carb bank cleanings, with compressor an all. Just to be sure I wound all rubber O rings with a littlt PTFE tape, especially mixture needle O ring. Seems to run a hell of a lot better now.
Give that a whirl.
Good Luck. Bobski.:smoke:

PTFE tape is the stuff that plumbers use to seal threaded pipe joints. It's white and kinda semi rubbery - a bit like gasket sealant on a roll!!

For what it's worth, it sounds very much like the carbs are suspect. Have you checked the floats?
06/07/2002 at 15:16
the floats have all been done, iv` found a split ht lead ive replaced it and it s quiter but still fouling the plugs i`ll do all the seals and see if thats better

i stil rekon it could be the taps myself... has it got a prime position? so the fuel will flow with out the engine running? see if it flows enuf that way..or rig a can to the carbs... worth a go anyway....

sidecar jon, if you take my advice you are in deeper trouble than i thought.

it has got a prime it does flow freely i`m not so sure if it is the tap, i`ve had the carbs done but i`ve done them my self today(getting oil on the keyboard keys) its starting better but stiil fouling the plugs and over heating i`m well pissed off with it it`s costing me a fortune in new plugs

humm run it on prime?... sounds like its running horribly rich..choke stuck on?.. air filter wet/blocked?.. if its got carb diaphrams could be holed..... i think id take the fileters off see if it runs any better... if it does it means its the filters or that the higher air flow is helping to run leaner so could be air screws/ needle heights/ float heights ( see if fuel over flows into the throat of the carbs as it runs) / if it has acelorater pumps they may be flowing too much fuel.... ..

sidecar jon, if you take my advice you are in deeper trouble than i thought.
