been studying the ignition system on my r6 a little close and have just noticed that it's wired to fire the sparks on two cylinders simultaneously... 1&4 and 2&3 get fired at the same time.
if i've got this right then is this a normal bike thing? why are they not fired separately?

It's cheaper to have two dual-output coils and waste a spark than to fit an individual coil for each cylinder - saves space too.

The wasted spark will occur when the piston is at the top of its exhaust stroke so it makes absolutely no difference. If each cylinder had it's own coil then on earlier nikes it would also needs its own timing system and CDI unit or points.

but it does have individual coil for each cylinder, and the timing sensor is firing each individual cylinder... looks like a waste of a perfectly good spark for the saving what looks like only 4 wires in the loom and maybe only a tiny bit more complex ecu
