Beanie owns these two items and in the tradition of workshop will explain how exactly they came to be in their current condition.

This is his current tyre and no he has not being doing burnouts just the commuting run into London.

It's not the tyre it's the adapted brake blocks he's got fitted either side of it

Erm, the spark plug is so coloured because the engine excessively burns oil and has been for the last 4 years at least (a minimum of 1l every 1000 commuting miles and about 1l for every 300 FLASH Tour/Trackday miles).

The tyre is slightly worse than the photo shows. It's actually down to the steel for half the circumference of the tyre. This is because I am excessively tight with my money and expect about 15k out of a rear boot.

Bez, B&Q have given me a loyalty card for the amount of wood blocks I buy.

Bit of an update to keep you all well!! updated.
Beanie loves this bike. The thought of parting with it fills him with horror.
The bike has done 91k miles which is pretty good. It is in remarkably good order for the mileage, however things do and have worn out on it[Beanie not included]. Some of the wiring is corroded but not beyond repair. Bearings have dried out but are salvagable so far. The engine was low on compression [not suprising really] and it burns lots of oil hence the state of the plug. A compression check showed it to be about a third down on normal. Drop of oil in the bores pushed this back up to a good reading. This would show the valves and top end is in working order but the bores are worn.
couple of options spring to mind.
1 Oversize rings. Personally I dont like this option as to get them to fit you need to file the ring gap to get it into the bore. Rings are round and by closing the gap you make them oval so not a good idea.
2. Rebore and oversize pistons. Downside is cost. Bike has done 91k so new bores and pistons should be good for many miles but the crank and all the other oily bits have still done 91k.
3.New rings and the barrels honed out prior to fitment. Replace valve stem seals regrind the valves and reshim. [This is the one I would favour] It should use less oil after the rings bed in but it will still use some.

On top of this you need to add the costs of gaskets which is at least £100.
Both tyres are shagged. Chain and sprockets are maybe/maybe not. But have not been fully scrutinised yet neither has the rear end been touched as yet so may well be some bearings in the swingarm etc to attend to..

Ultimatly the cost and what gets done is down to Cam. But you could buy a half decent TDM for £1500.
Needs a bit of though and a long discussion with Pippa.

As for the blocks of wood?? I have the bike hooked up to the roof of my workshop on a set of pulley's so the engine is about waist high. Makes access easy. The blocks of wood are under the swingarm to stop it swaying side to side. The flat bit in the middle of the tyre helps mind.

Sounds like your on the right lines there MC, Ive find with the yams as trany is in good shape there worth keeping. 91k is ok (esp commuting, its hard work), If the bore looks good then a new set of rings.

As long as the clutch and box are ok , id be tempted to go for it, esp if you like the bike.

See Cam another vote for new rings. As far as I am aware Kev the tranny is in pretty good shape. The bike ticked over sweet [before I got my hands on it] Had the cover of the oil pumps last night and the plastic cogs which are a known weak point are in very good nick so thats a good sign the pumps were working ok. Yams are not my speciality, in fact I wouldnt call my self an expert on any models but I dont mind going in where angels fear to tread occasionaly. If it looks really dodgy I will send Cam in first just in case it breaks. Plausible deniability clause cuts in automatically then.:smoke:

I've just bought a BMW Rockster. It's a good bike, but I miss the TDM every day.

Why not? My bike is ten years old and has actually covered in excess of 100k miles!

Remember that the bike was actually running acceptably well and was taken off the road to give it a refurb, i.e. I could still have used it.

By the way, you didn't know your front sprocket was knackered, I knew there were issues with my bike.

How long after purchasing your bike did you notice your wheels were blue?

I fully suport Cam in this. His TDM is what you call well run in but was still running remarkably well. At the sort of mileage on it you would expect a few little foibles.
